Google Update Mobile YouTube Service

For those who use an iPhone or Android smartphone, you can now access YouTube more easily through the mobile browser. Google [GOOG] has announced a new update to m.youtube.com that brings more features to the small screen.

New features include a faster browsing experience along with a new designed UI that has large and touch friendly elements making it more easy to control. Search query suggestions have been added along with the ability to create playlists, designate favourites as well as like and unlike options for videos.

Also the new m.youtube.com site also follows more closely with the desktop version. When changes happen to the large site they should shortly after be added to the mobile site making your mobile browsing experience match more closely with the desktop version. [Read more…]

Android 2.2 Beats iOS 4 in JavaScript Speed Tests

When Google [GOOG] announced Android 2.2 they demonstrated that the new OS managed to increase performance on devices that can run it. The speed increase is possible because of a high performance JIT in the Android Dalvik runtime environment.

When compared to the iPhone 4, the Nexus One performs better in terms of javascript speed. The tests performed over at Arstechnica show that JavaScript runs three times quicker on the Nexue One running Android 2.2.

We compared these findings with that of our tests of Apple’s mobile Safari browser on the iPhone 4. The results show that the Android device delivers significantly faster JavaScript execution than the iPhone, scoring over three times better on V8 and almost twice as fast on SunSpider. Apple has some work to do it if wants mobile Safari to retake the crown as the fastest mobile browser.

Band-Aid Heart Rate Monitor

The Smart Band-Aid is a device that sticks on your body and has sensors built in to measure your heart rate. The system is capable of tracking beat-to-beat heartrate monitoring while performing real time analysis.

It is also believed that the band-aid will also wirelessly connect to other devices so you could wear the patch while working out and attach it to an iPhone for example although it isn’t clear yet how commercial this particular product will become. Perhaps it will just stay in hospitals and be used to monitor patients for example. [Read more…]

Pencil iPad Stand

The team over at Geeky Gadgets have created another home-made stand. Previous versions included the iPhone Pencil Stand that as the name suggests, holds an iPhone.

The new stand is called the Pencil iPad Stand and was designed to hold an iPad in place on your desk so you can watch a movie. The design used for this stand follows the same style before in that you get a few elastic bands and pencils and tie them together to create a place for the iPhone to sit on. However, the iPad is larger and due to the larger size and extra weight, the stand had to be put together slightly differently to compensate for the size and weight change. [Read more…]

Three MiFi Review

A few weeks back I mentioned that 3MobileBuzz had sent over a Three MiFi for testing. My initial Three MiFi Review was overall positive although I needed to test further to get a better impression of how it worked whilst travelling. Well, I’m back and I’m glad to say it performed well.

The Three MiFi we tested is the Huawei E5830 version (now replaced with the 2nd gen model). The device is simple to set up and has just 3 buttons on the casing. One powers the device on and off, the second enables and disables the WiFi network and the third button enables and disables the mobile broadband connection (see image below). From powering up to being online takes around 30 seconds to 1 minute although it does require 3 button presses which could be just made to 1 press with firmware I believe. Not a major issue though.

The display on the device is very basic showing just 5 icons. The top right icon is the battery indicator. The top left shows signal. The bottom left shows if WiFi is enabled. The bottom right shows the mobile broadband connection and the middle light shows if you are roaming. Previously I had said I wanted more details to be displayed on the screen although when actually using the device I rarely looked at the screen unless it dropped my connection which happened maybe 2 or 3 times a day for whatever reason. Again, it wasn’t a major issue and mobile devices do lose signal occasionally. It’s just a 2 second hold of the data button and I was up and running again. [Read more…]

Zlin iCub Plane gets an iPad Integrated in to Cockpit

Zlin are unveiling a new plane soon. The new plane is called the iCub and as the name suggests, it integrates Apple [AAPL] technology in to the cockpit.

The iCub has a space available to fit an iPad that can be used to navigate around. When normally choosing navigation equipment the costs can run in to the $1000’s due to the amount of equipment you need. However, the iCub is not designed for mundane tasks of flying from a to b. Instead, it’s supposed to be a fun plane to fly. The iPad has apps that make it versatile enough to be used in the plane so that weather charts and navigation details can be displayed with the iPad 3G’s built in GPS sensor. The iPad 3G is far cheaper than the regular GPS equipment you buy for a plane. [Read more…]

Windows Phone 7 Could Arrive Earlier According to AT&T POS

We’ve heard twice in the last couple of weeks that we will be seeing Microsoft [MSFT] launch Windows Phone 7 sometime in October. Prior to that it was expected the launch would be closer to the end of the year.

The first time we heard an October launch date was when the HTC Mozart WP7 device was spotted with a bad photoshop done on a slightly different handset. The second time was at a Microsoft Advertisers event where the company were discussing advertising options as well as how to sell apps etc… Early on in that presentation the October date was also mentioned.

We now see over on Engadget a picture posted that shows some AT&T retail materials relating to Windows Phone 7 which indicates the launch is sometime soon. [Read more…]

Microsoft Patent Reveals Six-Axis Remote Control Device

The regular remote control has stayed quite standard over the years other than dropping a wire, adding a screen, becoming radio controlled rather than infra-red as well as being able to store several remote controls in one.

You’d have probably thought by now that the remote control wasn’t really going to advance that much (not referring to iPhone and iPad integrations here). Well, Microsoft [MSFT] appears to be working on a new remote control that has a six-axis sensor capable of detecting what way you are holding the device. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy S vs HTC Desire – Quake 2

The Samsung Galaxy S is a powerful smartphone. We’ve heard over the last few months that the device is capable of shifting a lot of triangles per second. When compared to the iPhone 3GS, it can shift just over 3 times more per second at 90 million.

This comparison shows the Samsung Galaxy S vs the HTC Desire with each smartphone running Quake 2. Technical spec wise, the Samsung Galaxy S uses a Hummingbird/Power VR chipset. The HTC Desire has a Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1GHz and an Adreno chip. Both configurations are quite respectable although you’ll sure see a difference when you see them side by side. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy S2 to get 2GHz CPU – Rumour

The Samsung Galaxy S is a fantastic device that has not long been out. We now are starting to hear rumours of a new next-gen version of the smartphone that will be called the Samsung Galaxy S2. The Galaxy S2 is said to have a 2GHz processor. We hear the S2 will also have a 720p HD display that can display an impressive 1280 x 720 pixels. The screen will measure 4.3 inches.

We also hear that the Galaxy S2 will have 1GB of RAM and 4GB of ROM along with 32GB of storage space built in. More can be added by using a microSD if needed.

On the back is rumoured to be an 8 megapixel camera. Back on to the 2GHz processor. It is unclear at the moment if it will be two 1GHz chips or a single 2GHz processor. Either way, it sounds powerful and should add more kick to the already fast Galaxy S. [Read more…]

iTunes Accounts Hacked to Inflate Sales Numbers and Steal Cash

Over the weekend some interesting news started appearing about iTunes accounts being hacked. One of the hackers is believed to be associated with Thuat Ngyun who might be the hacker, or associated with the group. Either way, the apps published accounted for at least 42 out of 50 in the Books category charts which is odd considering none of the books had any reviews at all with the exception of the odd rating here and there.

Right now the books are not in the app store any more, so it appears that Apple [AAPL] have responded although Engadget are still waiting for a response when they reached out a couple of days ago.

The main problem is not so much the books being raised in popularity, but the facts of how they got there. The books sold cost money and the money was spent by hackers breaking in to iTunes accounts leaving some users with over $100 of sales in their iTunes account. [Read more…]

HTC HD2 Android Download Now Ready

Some decent progress has been made over the past couple of weeks with getting the HTC HD2 running Google Android. Progress accelerated when a CPU bug was patched that prevented HaRET from loading up. HaRET is needed for booting the Linux-kernel so that Android can be installed.

Just on Thursday the team who got HaRET working also managed to get Android 2.1 and Windows Mobile 6.5 booting side by side.

We now hear that Android for the HTC HD2 is ready for download over at XDA Developers. The thread is quite long, but contains all the details and progress notes that you’ll need to get Android or any other Linux based OS installed on to the HTC HD2. [Read more…]
