Here is a video of Steve Jobs announcing the iPod back in 2001. When it was launched it had a 5GB hard drive, was just over 3/4 of an inch thick and could store 1000 songs. Battery life was claimed to be 10 hours of continuous play although I know that my 3rd Gen iPod only could handle a few hours so I am not sure if that was true for the 1st gen.
It is interesting to look back to the start of the iPod and see it announced. I wonder if they knew what kind of a gold mine they were sitting on at the time.

If you enjoy photography and like getting some good shots of your self in front of castles and such then the quikpod can help you out although you will look a tad strange. The quikpod is a device which fastens to the bottom of your camera in to the tripod socket. You can then hold the quickpod away with the camera facing you and capture a nice picture of your self in front of the Eiffel tower. To make sure the camera is correctly facing you a built in self image positioning mirror is included.

If you are looking at going swiming with your iPod then you will need one of these cases from H20. The case features rubber seals which keeps it completly waterproof down to 3 meters which is just fine for regular swimming type activities. The case still allows you to control the iPod by its unique CommanderTM scroll wheel control. Just remember that you will need the correct type of headphones to go under water. H20 also have sorted that already with their nice designed headphones which are also fully waterproof. A picture of the headphones can be found after the jump.

I have seen quite a few Apple patents over the last several months since gadget venue was launched. The latest patent that has been found is for a touch surface on the back of the iPod which allows you to control what is on the front of the screen by touching the back of the device. It isnt all guess work though as when you touch the back of the iPod, some controls show up on the screen so you can see what you are doing. The surface is going to be touch sensative which means that if you slide your finger across the back, it will slide the cursor on the front, and if you press harder it will make a click.

One thing that has often bugged me about my iPod is that I need to take it out of my pocket to see what track I want to change to. The inline remote control is good, but it still doesnt make it clear what you are going to listen to next unless you have your play lists memorised. Engineers from the University of Toronto and Microsoft Research are devising a system which uses audio for navigating menus. It is designed for devices such as the iPod with a circular menu system. It works by giving clues to the user allowing you to switch between songs and folders by listening to where you are.

The new ish iPod second gen shuffle unfortunatly has a different connector on the bottom of it which does not allow it to dock in a regular iPod docking station. The Dock Adapter sits in the regular iPod docking station and then allows you to connect your shuffle. It is a simple, but handy device as there are far more regular docking stations around in which your shuffle now becomes compatible with.
The dock adapter will be selling for $19.99 and is available on pre order at the moment via the link below.

BluEye is designed for the iPod and is compatible with your mobile phone. It seamlessly connects both devices together allowing you to listen to music and make and take calls through your iPod. When this device is connected to your iPod you then pair it up with your mobile phone. BluEye has a built in microphone allowing you to speak and the iPod headphones act as a speaker. When the call is finished the music resumes playing from where it left off. This device is one of those genius type devices. Mobile phones themselves can be ok for listening to music, but for some reason I personally just prefer my iPod for this. Being able to listen to music with out fear of missing a call is ideal, especially as I am on call and its crucual I do answer my phone when ringing.
The BluEye is not only a Bluetooth transmitter/receiver, but it also is capable of receiving FM signals so you can listed to radio stations over your mobile phone. Yet again, this is another smart move. The BluEye also allows you to store your favourite 15 stations. One last cool feature is that it works as a remote control for your iPod. Being designed in White it fits in well with the style of the iPod and makes the device look like it was meant to be there.

iPod docks are very handy devices allowing you to connect to a bunch of audio and visual equipment while charging at the same time. The next one in line is very unexpected though and comes in the form of an iPod fireplace dock. The fireplace is a CalSpas FRP4300 version and has built in 4 x 9 inch speakers and comes with a remote control to control the iPod.
My honest opinion on this… Its a little crazy 🙂
