Apple TV Jailbreak Exploit

The Apple TV runs iOS 4.1, and because of that it means it can be jailbroke although official tests haven’t been performed yet.

The developer of the SHatter exploit, @pod2g, managed to use the SHatter code to decrypt the keys.

It’s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. Even though the new AppleTV isn’t yet in people’s homes, the firmware is available on Apple’s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys! The main filesystem (“Mojave8M89.K66OS”) key for 018-8609-066.dmg is:

SHatter iOS 4.1 Jailbreak

The SHatter iOS 4.1 jailbreak looks to be moving along nicely looking at information provided by the iPhone Dev Team.

The video embedded below shows an iPod touch 4th gen model being jailbroke. The SHatter software will use the exploit found by pod2g.

In the meantime, we’ve put @pod2g’s exploit into a beta version of PwnageTool to test the waters. The SHAtter exploit was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to our custom IPSW. The successful result is shown below! It’s all working: customized Preferences to show battery percentage, Cydia, root shell…the works!

Game Center for iOS 4.1 Ported to iPhone 3G

Game Center is part of the iOS 4.1 update that landed a few weeks back. However, it only works on the newer models of iPhone and iPod touch and leaves out the iPhone 3G from that compatibility list.

If you were disappointed by this news then perhaps take a look over at Redmond Pie who managed to get Game Center working on the iPhone 3G by making a few tweaks to the settings.

To get it working, the team used the Redsn0w jailbreak and edited a file within to switch the Game Center software back on. From looking at the video (embedded below), it seems to run quite well although there is a little lag in some places. The slow response in certain areas of Game Center is probably why Apple [AAPL] dropped support for it as they are quite keen on making things run smooth on iOS devices. [Read more…]

Voice Memos App in iOS 4.2 To Get a New Icon

Apple [AAPL] looks to be changing the Voice Memos icon in the latest iOS 4.2 build. The current icon has a red background with a detailed microphone. The new version looks to be a little more basic with a standard blue background with a white mic on top of that.

This move will keep a consistent look across all iOS devices as well as with the iPod nano. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 3G Released

Another jailbreak has been released for iOS 4.1. This time it’s the iPhone 3G and second generation iPod touch that can be jailbroke.

The iOS 4.1 jailbreak is called Redsn0w, which we have seen before. The tool has been updated and uses the pwnage2 DFU-mode that Redsn0w used on earlier versions.

The Redsn0w jailbreak tool is currently available for the Max OS X although Windows users will need to wait a little longer to be able to use the jailbreak tool. [Read more…]

Awareness iPhone App Brings Outside Noise to Music

When using earphones, it can be particularly dangerous when outside noise is blocked out. This is even more the case when using earphones that isolate noise.

The Awareness app has been built for the iPhone and is designed to work in the background of your iOS 4 device. What it does is use the microphone to track ambient noise levels. When you first load up the app, you are presented with a meter. The iPhone app measures the surrounding noise and sets a default level for the environment you are in.

When you are walking down the street for example and a loud noise occurs above the standard level, such as a truck passing or a car horn, the application lets the noise through to the earphones so you can hear the external noise. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS Incoming

On September 23, a new iOS 4.1 jailbreak will be released for the iPhone 3GS and lower devices. This means that for iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4th gen users, you will still have to wait around for another option.

The jailbreak software is called Sn0wbreeze 2.0 and when available, will allow Windows users to create custom firmware files that prevent the baseband being updated when you upgrade the firmware on the phone. What this in turn does is allows you to use Ultrasn0w to unlock the phone so that it can be used on any carrier you want (or any compatible carrier we should say). [Read more…]

Google Docs Editing Coming to iPad

There’s good news for iPad owners who want the ability to edit Google Docs documents whilst on the move, as Google [GOOG] is releasing Google Docs for the iPad that will allow documents to be edited and perhaps created.

This ability is already available in the web based version, but to be honest, it’s quite bad and jumps in to a basic mode where you need to click edit on each row to edit the data. It’s really not up to scratch and feels clunky and is frustrating to use.

It appears that the application is for the iPad only, but it could also include the iPhone and iPod touch as well at a later date. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 2 Release Date: End of Q1 2011 – Rumour

Another rumour is going around about the iPad 2 release date. We have heard previously that a new iPad will be launched in November this year, then it was December and now it is end of Q1 2011.

Most people expect that Apple [AAPL] will release the iPad 2 based on how the iPhone and iPod touch gets updated, which is generally yearly. This would make it an early April launch for the iPad 2 which means Digitimes isn’t that far out with it’s guess. [Read more…]
