Tomtom and Garmin Jumping on the Mobile Wagon

GPS Handheld
Several phones such as the Nokia N95 have built in GPS receivers and built in mapping software. According to speculation this is making Garmin and Tomtom look in to the GPS enabled phone market. This really isnt a big surprise because if I went with a GPS enabled phone and it had decent mapping software I would ditch my TomTom navigator right away. Tomtom do have a good edge as they create software for mobile phones and do have Tomtom Go which can have a SIM inserted for hands free use. However, none of these are true phone options and should a provider have decent software then why would you go spend extra?

Sony NV U92T

Sony NV U92T
Following in Sonys way of slimming things down, the NV-U92T follows this trend. It is a very slim GPS sat nav system which is just 2CM in depth. It has a 4.8 inch wide screen display which is also touchscreen. An interesting feature that caught my eye is the gesture command support. If you draw a picture of your house it will navigate you home. The device has 2Gb of internal memory and can be expanded by using a Sony Memory Stick.

Unfortunatly we do not have pricing or other details yet, but as soon as they arrive we will get them out to you.

Google Earth – Wifi Mesh

Skycontrol Google Earth Wifi Mesh
Using a mixture of a Wifi Mesh on top of Google Earth can help give a birds eye view of how a wireless network mesh is running. As seen in the picture above the SkyControl software collects node data with GPS coordinates and link states. This then creates a satellite based image in Google showing the status of the mesh.

Skycontrol is used in a NOC (Network Operations Centre) and allows you to manage and see a whole network based on a map system. This eliminates the need for manual mapping techniques and can give a real time status to the engineers.

Overall this could be a valuable took for those running a wifi mesh and help track problems and provide accurate maps to find and solve problems with in a short period of time.

GooPs – Track yourself on Google Earth

Google GPS
Since the launch of Google Earth, we have been able to see satellite images of the earth, quite often in high detail and zoom in and out of a 3D environment. A few years back this would have cost a lot of money to have access to something like this. Mixing Google Earth with a GPS receiver, laptop and some free software you can get a very powerful in car/portable mapping system in seriously cool detail. The software you can use is called GooPs which allows you to interface the GPS device with Google Earth. Once connected and paired via Bluetooth you can fire up Google Earth and track where you visit. Another excellent feature is the caching feature of Google Earth which allows you to put it up to 2Gb. You can then zoom in to the city or place you want to visit and then use the cache to have access to the software while on the road.

The tracking software can be colour coded to show speed increases and other things. Overall it’s a very nice and very affordable solution.

Sony PSP V2

Sony PSP
The Sony PSP was launched over 2 years ago and rumours are now circulating that a redesign could be due. The PS1 and PS2 have both been through dramatic redesigns slicing all the excess off the larger versions and making them a whole lot smaller. I do not think there is too much more that could be cut down on the Sony PSP as it boasts a seriously nice sized screen which would be a shame to make smaller, however, it could be made a tad thinner. I am sure the design team at Sony will do something good with the PSP. Some PSP users are requesting a second analogue stick.

Features I would like to see in the new version is a thinner form, same sized screen, memory based rather then UMB based, dual analog controllers, analogue buttons like the PS2 and PS3 control pad and maybe a rumble option 🙂 Of course features such as wifi should stay, with the possibility of Bluetooth and GPS. We can dream though, although it’s all technically feasable with the advancements in technology.

Navigon 3110

Navigon 3110
The Navigon 3100 and 3110 are GPS units. The 3.5 inch screen is QVGA, the processor runs at 400MHz and the kit comes built in with Navigon MobileNavigator version 6. This software is actually running on Windows CE 5. Looks wise, this GPS system looks quite nice and the case measures just 0.9 inches thick.

On the 512Mb card version regional maps are available and the larger 2Gb device holds up to 37 european countries. Pricing is about average at $324 for the 3100 and $428 for the 3110.

JIT – Just in Time Watch

JIT - Just in Time Watch
As well as looking quite cool, this watch is unique in the way of using GPS to track your location and then instead of displaying the actual time, it has a count down to when you should leave to get to your next appointment on time. It is an interesting idea which could work well if the company launch it. The JIT watch still needs some refinement but could still be a great seller as it is now.

Nokia N99
The N series Nokia’s get better and better each time they launch. But, ufortunatly the N99 is just concept at the moment. If it were to be real then it would feature a full qwerty keyboard as well as a touchscreen display. Also a hefty 8 megapixel camera was thrown in there and it has a 3.2 inch wide screen display. Ok, that is not all. GPS is included as well as wifi and lots of other stuff. Should this appear soon then we will let you know more details closer to it’s arrival.
