Panasonic Strada PNS

Strada PNS
The Strada CN-MP50D was created by Panasonic and is a PNS (Portable Navigation System). Usually they are referred to as GPS devices. It has a 5″ LCD screen running in widescreen format at 480 x 272 pixels. The screen is also backlit. As well as having 2 GB of storage the Strada also has a 1Seg TV tuner in there too. The device will cost 455 Euros and seems to only be available in Japan. I must admit that the 3D nav pictured does look quite cool with that lane guidance built in.

Due to it having a 1Seg tuner in there I doubt we will see it over this side of the globe in it’s current form.

Sony Nav-U Series Split Screen

Sony-NV-U83T
Over at CES, Sony are introducing a couple of new Sat Nav-U units. The new sat navs are model numbers NV-U73T and NV-U83T. What sets it ahead of a number of Sat Nav units is the split screen which allows for a dual view. A common problem when using GPS for navigation is trying to work out exactly which exit to take should there be a few right next to each other. With the split screen set up it zooms in one the right side of the screen to show precisely what turning to take. Also it allows for you to get more familiar with POI (Points of Interest) around the immediate area.

Another feature it has is how it can keep track of you when a weak signal is present. It does they by the way of a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an accelerometer which can keep a good estimation of where you are travelling.

The 2 units mentioned above are to be made available early in spring this year and can be ordered over at SonyStyle costing $349.99 or $499.99.

Features of the Sony Nav-U83T

The U83T has a 4.8″ touch panel widescreen which also displays information such as live traffic updates. The units available in the US contain map data for the entire United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Also Bluetooth is available which allows you to hook it up to a mobile phone to use it as a hands free kit. Text to speach is available as well as a unique gesture command. What gesture command does is allows you to use on screen finger movements. An example would be using an inverted V to automatically navigate you home. This allows quicker access to the more common functions that you need.

Traffic updates come via radio reception which is constantly updated and when bad traffic is spotted, you are automatically routed around the problem.

Overall a very nice looking Sat Nav unit from Sony.

Cerevellum – Amazing Gadget for your Bike

cerevellum
The good old pedal bike is one of the greenest ways of travelling around. However, some like their cars due to the cool gadgets, sat nav, radio’s and sometimes TV’s. If you cannot give all the luxuries up then you might be able to now with the Cerevellum. The Cerevellum is an information device which attaches to the handlebars of your bike. It can be described as a mini computer which can have 4 modules attached via USB. These modules vary and each is interchangeable as the need changes. For example the Hindsight is a small camera that you mount on the back of your bike. The image is then displayed on-screen allowing you to quickly see what is behind. Another module is the power meter which can track speed, time, distance and keep track of other various statistics of your journey. For those who want a nice workout you could then choose the heart-rate module. This one measures how your heart is doing as you ride along. Of course there is always the GPS module which can be attached to provide directions when you are in unfamiliar territory.

Overall it’s quite a cool bike device which with it’s modular system could easily be expanded. All they need to create now is the air-con mod, the radio mod and the V12 mod.

Retro SatLess-Nav

honda_81_nav
Back in the early 80’s GPS satellites were around, but they did not become open to public use till 1994. Honda created this navigation system which did not use GPS and instead, used gas gyroscopes to track where you were driving to. All you had to do was slide in a transparent map of where you were and mark on the screen where your current location is and then drive around. The gyroscopes updated your position on screen so you would “never?” get lost.

Costing a hefty $2-$3k when it was launched in 1981 it was probably out of reach for most car owners.

Asus P527 with Journey Logger

asus-p527
The new Asus P527 runs on the Windows Mobile 6 Pro OS and has a unique tracking feature which allows you to visually log your journey. To accomplish this the device has built in GPS which can log where photo’s are taken and also allows a diary of events to be logged. Mixing this with their GPS information create a travel log. The information is exportable to Google Earth allowing for an interesting view of where you have been and what you did.

Another interesting feature I spotted on the device is a tracking tool which can send reports to pre defined friends in your contacts list and provide them details of where you are.

Other features on this device are a 2 mega pixel camera, FM receiver, Windows Media Player, Windows Live/Hotmail/MSN etc… and MS office applications such as Outlook so you can keep in contact via email.

Overall a nice looking and powerful device which I look forwards to seeing.

Nokia N82 Comparison

nokia-n82-compares-with-n95
The N82 from Nokia has some fairly impressive specs such as a 5 mega pixel camera with Xenon flash. Connectivity is plentiful too with HSDPA, Wi-fi, Bluetooth A2DP and GPS. The phone compares to the N95 in specs but is not a dual slider (or single slider) and has a keypad on the front face. We are expecting to see an official announcement about the phone in December.

Nokia N96 a Possibility?

n96_concept
Rumours have been floating around about a new phone from Nokia numbered the N96. This beauty packs in 10GB of internal memory (I assume similar to how the 8GB N95 is), has a 3.2 inch colour screen, wifi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a full QWERTY keyboard. The camera steps up a notch to 6 mega pixels and GPS navigation is included. Motion sensors are also to be found inside.

However, this is just rumour as Nokia have not confirmed this yet. The specs listed seem fairly standard so it could be a strong possibility that an N series (N96) is on it’s way to us sometime next year.

Making your PDA in to a HUD

PDA HUD
If you have a PDA then you could use the GPS Speed Sentry software to reflect the image on to your screen at night while driving. Although I havent checked it out myself yet, I assume that there is a way to mirror the screen so you are not looking at everything backwards. This only works at night as you do not see reflections too well through the day. By doing this you can keep your eyes on the road while checking out your speed and other details.

Nokia Maps get an Upgrade

Nokia Maps
Nokia Maps has been released which has a few new features. A GPS status indicator can now be seen which shows you when a GPS signal is available and when it is in use. Also the map loading software is quicker which allows quicker navigation loading. Maps by Nokia is a powerful free application which has maps for more then 150 countries. The only things you need to watch out for are data charges from your mobile phone carrier. It helps to have an unlimited plan. Nokia Maps can pinpoint where you are via GPS and can pull information from a database of POI (point of interest) telling you things like how far the closest cash machine is.
