The screen it’s self is estimated to cost $80 on each device with the battery, wireless, CPU, casing and other of the same features between the devices holding the same costs. How the Google Nexus One was Designed

When a company design a mobile phone you might expect they simply design how they want the phone to look (being realistic) and then put a circuit board, screen and a few other functions inside such as a GPS receiver, BT radio and Wireless radio and give it a name. Google [GOOG] have put together a video showing what went in to designing the Google Nexus One phone that was recently released and from what I see in the video a lot more thought goes in to it than I expected.

The Nexus One was designed in detail from the material used for the casing right down to what microphone they use to pick up your voice when you talk on a call. More detail in the video reveals that the Nexus One in fact has two micophones with one listening to your voice and surrounding sounds and the second just listening to surrounding sounds. Waves are combined and all but your voice is removed from the conversation. [Read more…]

TomTom’s IQ Routes Reveal US Aren’t Speeding

TomTom uses a system called IQ Routes that uses real time and historical data to calculate the optimal route to your destination. By recording speeds of traffic at all times of the day the system knows which roads are slow and which route will get you to your destination the quickest. Two years worth of data has been collected with average speeds being calculated on free flowing highways in the US and the data reveals that people in the US don’t speed in general.

The report found that in some cases, speed limits were exceeded but in general the average speed was below the limits imposed on the roads tracked. Although we mentioned IQ Routes in the title of this post and the post it’s self, the data is actually calculated using data from Speed Profiles who provide the historical database to TomTom and integrated as IQ Routes. The data is collected anonymously from GPS units sat in cars that are connected up via a mobile phone’s data plan so real time information can be collected. [Read more…]
