Sony VAIO P Series Teardown

Just hours after receiving details of the new Sony VAIO P Series (second gen model), we now get to see all the insides of the lime green version.

The new Sony VAIO P Series was first announced this morning where we learned that it has a GPS built in along with accelerometers, 3G data connectivity amongst a few other new features.

The teardown reveals that Sony has done a lot of work squashing all the components in to the P Series although in doing that they also get rid of a standard SSD and change it for another SSD with a different non standard connection. [Read more…]

Sony VAIO P Series – New Models Announced

Sony has announced new models in the Sony VAIO P Series. The new ultra-portable PCs weigh just over 600g and have a number of new features which includes a GPS sensor and a Digital Compass along with an accelerometer. 3G is built in to the new VAIO P series also allowing connectivity whilst on the move.

The new ultra-portable is described by Sony as giving a fully-features Windows computing experience… and so much more (in their words). By adding the extra functions such as the GPS, digital compass and 3G connectivity, it certainly does add a bit of versatility to the ultra-portable.

On the keyboard a trackball can be found along with a couple of buttons. Also duplicated is a set of more mouse controls that can be found at the edges of the screen. Both a touchpad and left/right mouse buttons can be found down the left/right side of the screen allowing you to control the ultra-portable VAIO P with your thumbs as pictured above. [Read more…]

TomTom XL 350 and XXL 550 Quietly Launched

TomTom has quietly launched a couple of new satnavs without any press release or particular mention on their website other than adding them to the lineup.

The two new satnavs are the TomTom XL 350 and the TomTom XXL 550. Both satnavs are for the US and are based on models from Europe that use the XL IQ routes. Both devices will use the same simplified menu system that is used on the TomTom EASE devices.

The first device is the TomTom XL 350 that has a 4.3 inch screen. This device will cost from $169.95 when launched and will come with lifetime maps and optional lifetime traffic updates if you pay more upfront. [Read more…]

Pioneer Launch 6 new SatNav Units in Japan

Pioneer are launching six new satnavs over in Japan that will cost from 112,000 to 352,000 Yen which is the equivalent of $1242 – $3904. The six new units, obviously top of the range units, are split in to two categories.

The first is the H9990 series that has a 7 inch screen capable of an 800 x 480 pixel resolution. This is in a 1+1 Din form and includes a 12Seg TV tuner along with other features such as DVD, CD, DSP, HDD and supports a number of file formats for playing back MP3 files, WMA, AAC. For connectivity it has Bluetooth as well as an iPod and iPhone connector although this is optional.

The next range is the AVIC-ZH9990 that is a 2 DIN device while the AVIC-H9990 is a 1 DIN HDD based GPS. Confused? Never mind as we definitely won’t be seeing these over in Europe or the US at least for now. [Read more…]

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Coming to Vodafone Soon

In the May edition of the Vodafone magazine a picture of the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini can be found indicating that it will be launching soon on that network. This is just the X10 Mini though and there is no mention of the X10 Mini Pro this time around.

A quick re-cap on what’s included in the X10 Mini show that it has a 5 megapixel camera. It runs the Android operating system. The X10 Mini has no QWERTY keyboard like the Mini Pro does, but other than that it’s essentially the same phone. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 3G Teardown

iFixit have done a teardown of the Apple iPad 3G that started shipping yesterday. Some interesting things found within included 5 antennas for various reception. The blackbar of course which we have seen before on the pictures and the micro SIM slot tucked in the side of the iPad.

The Apple iPad 3G is unlocked and works on UMTS/HSDPA on 850, 1900, and 2100 MHz and GSM/EDGE on 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz. This makes it compatible with AT&T as well as T-Mobile on EDGE.

The five antennas include two for handling cell reception. One of them attaches to the black RF bar on the top of the iPad while the other attaches to the frame of the LCD screen. The third antenna is for the GPS unit and the fourth and fifth are for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. [Read more…]

webOS 1.4.1.1 Launches on Verizon

webOS 1.4.1.1 is now on it’s way to Verizon webOS devices.

The update has come at a time when HP have announced they are buying Palm, so it’s good to see that things are still moving in the right direction.

Things included appear to be some fixes to the accuracy of the keyboard where letters are not repeating as much. Also GPS fixes are happening a lot quicker from what we have read which wasn’t the case on the Palm Pre Plus running an older OS install. [Read more…]

Dell Lightning Windows Phone 7 Leaks

This morning we wrote about three new Dell Android devices that are due to launch late this year and next year.

The next smartphone we hear of (leaked from Dell) is the Dell Lightning. The Lightning is a Windows Phone 7 device that is a portrait slider. Inside a 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor is to be found. The screen measures 4.1 inches and is a WVGA format. The screen is OLED.

The Dell Lightning has a 5 megapixel camera that can autofocus. Memory wise it has 1GB of flash, 512MB RAM and 8GB of storage built in that due to Windows Phone 7 requirements will be non user changeable. [Read more…]

HTC Legend Heading to India

The HTC Legend is on it’s way to India from what we read today. This follows shortly after the UK launch that has already happened.

The HTC Legend runs a 600MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The OS running is Google Android. The device has a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen.

Features include WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth along with an FM radio. Storage capacity can be increased via a microSD card. [Read more…]

Microsoft Kin One and Kin Two Specs Revealed

Recently, Microsoft [MSFT] announced the Kin One and Kin Two smartphones. The phones have been specifically designed for social networking and have a new user interface geared towards sharing with others and keeping up to date.

The Microsoft Kin One has a 2.6 inch capacitive touchscreen with a QVGA resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. On the back is a five megapixel camera sensor that has several features including autofocus, anti shake and a flash. For connectivity the Kin One has Wireless that can connect to 802.11b/g networks. 4GB of internal memory can be found inside along with an FM radio, Accelerometer and GPS. The phone has 256MB of RAM. Leica V-LUX 20 Compact Camera gets HD and Geo-Tagging

The Leica V-LUX 20 has been officially announced. Features included in the camera include a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 12 times zoom and GPS tagging. The camera is also able to capture video in a HD resolution of 720p.

The 12x zoom is optical that is provided by the 4.1-49.2mm f/3.3-4.9 lens. 4x optical zoom is also available on the camera.

The V-LUX 20 is Leica’s first camera that uses GPS tagging and allows for GPS co-ordinates to be captured and stored in the image EXIF data file allowing you to map where pictures were taken. As well as capturing and saving the GPS coordinates the camera also stores the local time that the images were captured. [Read more…]

LG Optimus GT540

The last time we heard about the LG GT540 was back at CES in January. Back then the launch date of the phone was said to be April this year and then I don’t ever remember hearing of the phone since then.

Today the LG Blog in France gave an update to the handset and revealed it will be known as the LG Optimus when launched. The Optimus runs the Google [GOOG] Android 1.6 (donut) operating system.

Other specifications include 5 keys on the front of the device with 3 being physical and 2 being touch keys. The display on the LG Optimus measures 3 inches and has a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. The processor running inside is a Qualcomm Qualcomm MSM7227 that runs at 600MHz. [Read more…]
