New Screen has Pixels Eight Times Smaller than Retina Display

When Apple [AAPL] launched the iPhone 4, it came with the retina display. The retina display had a higher pixel density squashing more pixels in to an inch than any other mobile screen. The results are that individual pixels cannot be distinguished between when holding the phone at about a foot or more from the eye.

The pixel density could be smashed though as researchers have created a screen that has eight times the pixel density of the retina display. The researchers are based at the University of Michigan who created the screen with nanometer-thin sheets of metal that are named nanresonators. [Read more…]

Sony a33 and a55 Swivel Screen DSLRs Unveiled

Some pictures of a couple of new Digital SLR cameras from Sony have been found by the Photorumours website. The two new models are the Sony a33 and the Sony a55.

Each camera uses a pellicle mirror to split the light in two directions when pictures are captured. For details on what that means, you can check out this Wikipedia article or see a basic break down below…

A pellicle camera uses a semi-transparent mirror within the light path splitting the incoming picture light beam into two separate beams, both of reduced light intensity. Allowing the light beams to be used for more purposes simultaneously.

Kindle and iPad Screens Compared Under Microscope

Keith over at Bit101 got his hands on a USB microscope. After realising that holding it to a Nexus One, he could see the individual pixels, he decided to test what the Amazon Kindle screen looks like compared to the iPad screen.

This isn’t a scientific experiment to prove that one screen is better than another. Images were just captured out of curiosity to see what the two screens look like when compared to each other as well as a comparison to a printed newspaper. [Read more…]

Apple iPod touch Could get Retina Display and Dual Cameras

The Dell Streak pricing was revealed yesterday on the AT&T network. You might be wondering what this has to do with the next gen iPod touch 4… well, in a post written over at Daring Fireball, John Gruber also mentioned the Dell Streak pricing, but also dropped a couple of details about the next gen iPod touch in that it will have a Retina display as found in the iPhone 4 along with dual cameras like the iPhone 4. The comparison was made because the Dell Streak looks a little overpriced in comparison when compared to the iPad or iPod touch pricing.

With the information coming from John Gruber, we are inclined to believe it. This is for a couple of reasons… first is that he is often spot on with the details he reports on in regards to Apple, and it just seems like the next logical step for the iPod touch to follow the iPhone in terms of technology used. iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS Screen Comparison

One of the biggest features of the iPhone 4 from Apple [AAPL] is the new screen used which they call the Retina Display. The retina display has four times the amount of pixels when compared to the older iPhone models. This, according to Apple, makes it impossible to see the individual pixels when using the device at a normal distance away from your eyes.

There’s been a few complaints about Apple’s claim, but I think the picture above (larger below and even larger when clicked on) really shows what the new resolution is all about. We’ll wait until we see the iPhone 4 screen for ourselves, but from samples we have seen and side-by-side comparison pictures on the internet, it certainly looks very impressive. [Read more…]
