Apple MacBook Teardown

Apple [AAPL] launched a new 13 inch MacBook a few days ago that included a 10 hour battery life along with NVIDIA GeForce 320M integrated graphics and new processors.

iFixit decided to teardown the new MacBook, as they do with a lot of new gadgets, and took a look at what exactly was inside. A few highlights include the battery which measures the same size and is the same shape, but managed to get a rating of 63.5Wh compared to the older 60Wh battery used in the older model. The battery weighs just a few grams more than the older one and can actually be switched out to an older model to provide a bit of extra juice.

The layout of the new MacBook is similar to the older model and parts from the old can be used to fix the new in most cases. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4G Leaked Again

Things can’t be going too well for Apple [AAPL] at the moment after another iPhone 4G has been leaked in Vietnam. Perhaps we are looking at the same phone we have seen a couple of times before though. Right now, I’ve lost track of how many phones there have been captured on camera that all look very similar. I believe it might be the fifth as there was one captured earlier this year before the Gizmodo leak, then the Gizmodo leak, then Vietnam, then France and now Vietnam again. The last three and perhaps the first could all be the same unit though.

Either way, we now have a video of the iPhone running what appears to be some sort of diagnostic screen called Inferno. This looks to be a “bonfire” at the top of the screen with some text at the bottom of the screen showing some sort of USB status and a command saying Run Bonfire.

Some people believed the Inferno screen was just a static image, as in a sticker on the screen or a fake screen. We now see that this is part of the innards of the OS. [Read more…]

We are now hearing a few more details about this 12 inch netbook/notepad that show it will have automatic graphics switching along with a full HD output of 1080p.

By using automatic switching it allows the netbook to increase graphics capabilities on the fly and as and when needed and then pull back to conserve power when the requirements on-screen are less. [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] has made an update to the mobile image search feature on devices such as the iPhone running OS 3.0 and above and Android 2.1 devices. The new image search functions now run quicker and are easier to use than previously.

The new system allows for 16 thumbnails to be displayed on a single page in either portrait or landscape mode. When clicking a thumbnail of an image the thumbnail is then loaded on an individual page where you can scroll through thumbs by swiping left and right across the screen. Information about the image including the origin URL are included as well as buttons to take you back to the results, or to load a larger image if available. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone runs Google Android

Here is something we don’t see everyday, an iPhone that has been hacked to run Google Android. The video (embedded below) shows Android running on the iPhone. Not everything is in place such as the Android functions on various menus. The iPhone has had a few keys remapped to allow easier navigation around the phone, such as the power button being the back button and the volume buttons also having their own functions other than volume.

It doesn’t run the greatest, but it is an early build which the developer says is closer to an Alpha release than a Beta release. It does show potential though and although scrolling isn’t the quickest in the browser, the screen transitions are actually quite impressive and appear to beat my own G1 in terms of load speed. Apple iPhone OS 4.x might get Expose-like Interface for Multi-tasking

We have heard a few times before that Apple [AAPL] are intending on allowing multitasking on their iPhone 4.0 OS upgrade which will perhaps, show up with the Apple iPhone HD (aka iPhone 4G).

AppleInsider managed to get hold of details that indicate that the iPhone multitasking of 3rd part apps will function in a similar way to Expose on the Mac.

Those familiar with the design of iPhone 4.0 said that the user interface will resemble Apple’s desktop Expose feature, in that a key combination — reportedly hitting the Home button twice — will trigger an expose-like interface that brings up a series of icons representing the currently running apps, allowing users to quickly select the one they want to switch to directly. When a selection is made, the iPhone OS zooms out of the Expose task manager and transitions to that app.
