UK Motorola Xoom Android 3.1 Update Rolling Out

Motorola Xoom users in the UK are beginning to get the Android 3.1 update pushed out over the air. The new update is for Xoom 3G owners and is a little different from the Android 3.1 that rolled out to Xoom users earlier this year.

If you remember yesterday, US users of the Motorola Xoom got the Android 3.2 update which only added a small set of features to the device. So why does the UK only get 3.1? Well, 3.1 is different to the 3.1 seen earlier this year in the US in that microSD card support has been added in 3.1 although some features from 3.2 are missing.

Google Android Platform Distribution Stats Updated

The latest statistics about the Google Android platform have been published. The graph shows the usual rise of the newer versions of the operating system. The largest portion is Android 2.2 which accounts for 55.9% of all devices which is followed by Android 2.3.3/4 with a 23.7% share.

HTC Desire Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Arrives

HTC has announced that the new update for the HTC Desire has been made available. There’s a problem though as they also announced that a few features might break such as SMS and MMS as explained below:

In addition certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS and HTC also disclaims liability for any unusable functions.

Samsung Galaxy R Android Smartphone Confirmed

As well as confirming the white Galaxy S II today, Samsung has also confirmed the Samsung Galaxy R. The new smartphone is runs the Android 2.3 gingerbread operating system and has a 4.19 inch Super Clear LCD display. The resolution of the screen is 800 x 480 pixels.

Google has launched a new version of Google Earth for Android. The new and updated version has been designed to take advantage of the new processors found in Android 3.0 tablets. Android Market Catching Apple App Store in Size

In the next few months, it’s expected that the amount of apps available in the Android Market will overtake those available in the Apple App Store. The date this will happen will more than likely fall in August 2011 if the current trends continue.

By August, Google will have around 425,000 apps in the store available for download. What is important to note with this is that although there will be more apps available, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Android apps will make more money for developers.

Google has announced that Google Talk is being updated to include video chat. The update will begin rolling out to Nexus S owners in the coming weeks and following that, any device that supports Android 2.3 and has the correct hardware, meaning a camera, will also be getting the update.

Android to Take 49% Share of Smartphone Market by 2012

Research company, Gartner, has been looking in to smartphone sales around the world to come up with some very interesting numbers.

The report first hints that smartphone sales will reach 468 million around the globe this year. This is a 57.7 percent increase on sales from last year. We also learn that Google Android could well be the leader in the smartphone market by the end of this year and in 2012, could command about 49% of the market. [Read more…]
