Sony Ericsson ANZU To Run Android 2.3 When Launched

The XperiaX10 website has received an anonymous tip along with a picture that claims to show the next generation smartphone from Sony Ericsson called the ANZU. The ANZU is believed to be the successor of the Xperia X10 range of smartphones.

The device its self is said to have a 4.3 inch display and be very thin. As well as showing a leaked picture of the device, the ANZU will also run Android 2.3 when it launches rather than an older version. The phone pictured here shows it running Android 2.1 although this is a very early prototype model. [Read more…]

Motorola CLIQ Android 2.1 Update Finally Lands

The Motorola Cliq Android 2.1 update is finally now available. This comes a couple of weeks after a false alarm where it appeared to be made available briefly.

This particular update is 40MB in size on the internal storage and updates the CLIQ from Android 1.5 right up to 2.1 although 2.1 is no longer current. [Read more…]

Rovio has jut launched a new update for Angry Birds for Android smartphones.

Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta Download for Android Now Ready

Opera Software has announced the new Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta for Android based smartphones. The new mini browser essentially gives a choice to users who use the Android platform.

The new 10.1 beta version is a free download and can be grabbed through the Android Market.

“Android users now have a better choice when it comes to using a browser on their mobile devices,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “With Opera’s new browser for Android, we give users the opportunity to access the Web, using the best tools available.”

Nexus One Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Update Rumored for Devs This Week

An interesting tweet went out recently by Alvaro Fuentes that indicates the Google Nexus One will be getting an OTA update this week (developers handsets only) bringing Android from 2.2 to version 2.3 aka Gingerbread.

Google Android Gingerbread to Get Cleaner Menus

Some early hints as to what to expect in the next version of Google Android have been spotted in the latest Google Maps 4.60 update that landed last week.

Buried in the code is a specific section is a bit that specifys the menus to use. For Android 2.2 the level is set at 8. The new Google Maps contains a level 9 which hasn’t been used before. One particular user called canadiancow managed to switch the menus to level 9 and the image below (right hand side of the screenshot) shows what the new menus look like with level 9. [Read more…]

Updated Android Apps Now Show Recent Changes

Google [GOOG] has made a slight change to how app update in the market place are displayed.

It appears that Google is making the updates more consistent with what information is made available in that a box for changelogs is now included. Some developers were already adding changelogs in manually, but Google now has made a specific area for these changelogs to appear in. [Read more…]

8pen Keyboard Android App Helps Speed up Text Entry

The 8pen is a replacement for your regular virtual keyboard on an Android smartphone. The 8pen is a keyboard that detects gestures and allows you to slide your finger around the layout pictured above to write your message.

The creators of 8pen say that it is actually quicker to enter text with this keyboard than it is a traditional virtual QWERTY keyboard although it does require that you learn the system, which is also said to be quite easy. [Read more…]

Archos 70 Internet Tablet With Android 2.2 Now Shipping

Archos is starting to ship a new range of tablets starting today. The model that launched today is the Archos 70. It comes with 8GB of storage and it runs Android 2.2.

Technical specs show that this particular tablet has a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and has a screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. The screen is multitouch. [Read more…]

Android 2.2 Gains More

Google [GOOG] has released the next batch of figures for the distribution of the Android operating system. The charts are created to let developers know what fragmentation exists between the popular versions.

As expected, Android 2.2 continues to climb as more devices launch with it installed and with more carriers pushing 2.2 OTA updates out.

Android 2.1 is still in the lead with a 40.8% share. Android 2.2 is catching up though with a 36.2% share in installations. As for 1.5 and 1.6, they still account for almost a quarter of Android devices on the market. [Read more…]

Sony Ericsson X10 Android 2.1 Update Rolling Out

Sony Ericsson is beginning to roll out the Android 2.1 update for various Xperia smartphones. The list includes the Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro lineup.

The roll-out has started already, but rather than pushing it out to all handsets, Sony Ericsson is rolling it out to various “kits” as they refer to them as. A Kit is described as being a different variation of the phone which includes colours, accessories bundled etc…

The roll-out will take about a month to hit all handsets, so if you don’t get a notification now then you’ll just need to wait longer till its your turn. [Read more…]
