Google Maps Navigation works out of USA

Google-Maps-NavigationA few weeks ago XDA Developers folk managed to get Google Maps Navigation working on the T-Mobile G1. Of course, the navigation side of the software only worked in the USA and if using in Canada, Europe and anywhere else in the world you simply didn’t have the option to use navigation. Yet again the XDA forums people have managed to solve this problem and Google Maps Navigation can now work on your G1 along with the navigation features out of the USA.

Details of how to get navigation working can be found over on this thread. [Read more…]

Google Phone Coming Soon

htc-snapdragonTechCrunch are reporting that a new HTC phone running Android is just around the corner. Described as the next “super” Android Device, it is expected that HTC are to be the ones who will build the phone. Also TC mention that senior Android guys over at Google have now started carrying one of the HTC phones around for testing.

It is expected that the Dragon/Passion will be a super slim phone running Android… but TC also mention something else interesting in that there will actually be a real Google phone, branded by Google. Although not much is known about this Google branded phone, TC managed to find out that they are definitely working on a phone under their own brand. [Read more…]

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Hands-on Video – Runs Faster Now

xperia-x10A few weeks ago the XPERIA X10 was announced and at that time it was reported as being a bit sluggish in menu transitions and responsiveness in general. It seems like the new phone has had a firmware update though that has fixed all the problems.

With the phone coming in Feb 2010, there is still a bit more time for more tweaks although it seems the Android based phone is actually running ok now. [Read more…]

Google Chrome OS Landing Next Week

chromeGoogle [GOOG] back in July announced that they were working on a new operating system called Google Chrome OS. The new operating system is a step-up from Android in that it’s designed to run on computers rather than phones.

The main problem with the launch being next week is that there’s still a lack of drivers which will probably mean that when you install the OS on your computer you might get a bit disappointed that half of your hardware doesn’t work. However, it is believed that Google have a team of developers working on this as well as leaning on hardware manufacturers to create compatible drivers. [Read more…]

T-Mobile G1 gets Google Maps Navigation – Unofficially

Google-Maps-NavigationYesterday a challenge was set on the XDA Forums to see if any users could manage to get Google Maps Navigation to work on the T-Mobile G1. The thread was opened at 8:32pm last night with an answer to the problem being provided at 3:36am this morning with full instructions how to complete the hack.

Alright… i’ve yet to be able to identify the specific lines yet… but here you go.

I was able to get navigation using the 2 build props attached.

I used SU File Browser and adb to do this. You can do it all with adb but between the 2 i was able to do things faster.

Mount system as rw
delete build.prop and build.trout.prop
(or you may modify yours to match, and skip the next step)
push the new build.prop and build.trout.prop to /system/
delete /system/app/Maps.apk
delete /system/sd/app/com.google.android.maps.apk if present
delete /system/sd/dalvik-cache/data@[email protected]@classes. dex
REBOOT you have to reboot for the phone to re-read the build props
install the new maps.apk — i did adb install if you do not get Success then you missed something.

update: after all is working.. you may put your old build props back

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Announced

xperia-x10After a few months of rumours and leaks about the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and it’s change of name from Rachael to X3 and finally to X10, it has now been officially unveiled. The new SE Android based phone runs a 1GHz Snapdragon processor built by Qualcomm and has a healthy 4 inch capacitive touchscreen display which isn’t quite the size of the HTC HD2, but is still quite a large screen to work with.

It runs the Rachael Android UI which we showed a little of yesterday that features a complete overhaul of the media menus and video playback. As well as the fast processor, large screen and nice UI the phone has an 8.1 megapixel camera although on the downside for now, the phone is a little choppy and the snapdragon processor seems to quickly kill the battery. Don’t be too worried about that though as the UI is a very early stage as the phone isn’t getting released for another few months yet. We expect that when it is released the battery and choppy issues should be all sorted. [Read more…]

HTC HD2 Coming to T-Mobile UK November

tmobile-hd2T-Mobile in the UK have uploaded details of the HTC HD2 to their site stating it has a launch date of November. The problem is that they have displayed the wrong phone and also stated that the HD2 will give access to the Android Market to download apps… seems they are getting a little confused there.

But, the release date does look about right and looking at other pages on the T-mob site they do refer to a Windows Phone based device running WM 6.5, so it seems the release date is correct and that someone just mixed up a few of the details. [Read more…]

Sony Ericsson Rachael UI Video Released

kanye-se-rachel-uiA video of the Sony Ericsson Rachael UI was uploaded to Youtube recently showing off the new mediascape menu system for organising music, video and images. It appears that Sony Ericsson are working on their own Android media interface as the current Android one is a tad boring in my opinion.

It is currently believed that Rachael is the new Sony Ericsson X10 that will probably be announced on the 3rd November in just a few days time. Hopefully when the phone gets officially announced we can get a full look at what SE have done with Android and how much of it has been customised. [Read more…]

TomTom and Garmin Must be Hating It

TomTom-GarminLooks like both TomTom [TOM2] and Garmin [GRMN] might be hating life right now thanks to Google Maps Navigation that was announced. As can be seen in the graph here, things are heading in the wrong direction.

Perhaps the regular GPS/Satnav makers can hang on to one thing which is that the new Google Maps Navigation is available on Android 2.0 at the moment which doesn’t even have a market share yet, (ok, 2 things), and that it relies on having the said phone available on a network to download the maps real time. After a recent trip to the middle of nowhere I found that my online navigation just didn’t function when it had to replan a route. With nav systems like TomTom and Garmin they do store data off line on the memory card, so they do have a good benefit for some. [Read more…]
