Google Phone N1 gets 5 Minute Interface Preview

Currently we only have a few snippets of video of the boot screen on the N1 (nexus one) phone. That is until now though as someone has posted a 5 minute preview detailing a number of features from the Nexus One including a full interface walk through.

Looking at the video it appears to run very smoothly especially when you see the menu’s moving, Market Place scrolling and web pages loaded. Note that it is running over a wifi connection, but overall speed just seems to show the Nexus One being a lot more snappy than other phones. [Read more…]

Nexus One QR Code Scanned

Yesterday we came across a few more pictures of the Nexus One. One that stood out was the N1 pictures here which had the QR code revealed on the back. Previously this image was covered with post-it notes so nobody knew what was behind it.

After a bit of scanning and searching someone has managed to decode the barcode pictured on the back of the phone. The code takes you to a web address of this which is a game for the Nexus One Google Phone. If you visit the link from anything but a Nexus One phone you are just redirected back to the home page of the Android website. However, someone has managed to work around this to let you play the game elsewhere. [Read more…]

Google Phone – Nexus One Hands-On

Gizmodo managed to get to spend some time with the Google Phone AKA Nexus One. The N1 is built by HTC and is described by Gizmodo as being a Motorola DROID killer in all ways. The phone has no physical keyboard making it very thin. It’s fast and managed to beat both the DROID and iPhone in web page load speeds consistently.

The screen on the Nexus One (N1) measures the same as the DROID but has been described as looking amazing. The blacks are blacker and the colours are more vibrant making the whole visual experience far better.

The Nexus One currently runs Android 2.1 and overall it runs faster than the DROID. There are no official numbers on the CPU at the moment but Giz believe it to be a 1GHz processor inside providing a more snappy user experience. [Read more…]

Google Phone Called Nexus One

Google-NexusOneLate last week, Google [GOOG] handed out new phones to some employees which some are calling the official Google Phone. The phone is actually called the Nexus One and runs the Android 2.1 operating system that offers a few enhancements over what the DROID uses, ie, Android 2.0.

The phone is similar in looks to the HTC Passion although it’s a little slimmer. For now, it runs on the T-Mobile network as well as using WiFi.

In Android 2.1 there are new 3D elements to be found in the app tray along with a new grid icon that can be used to get a preview of all the home screen pages (which also have been increased in number to allow for more icons to be stored). [Read more…]

VMWare to Bring Dual OS Virtualization to Smartphones

VMWare are known for allowing multiple desktops to run on a computer by virtualizing the operating systems. The company are now bringing the same type of software to smartphones that will allow the phones to run a couple of OS’s at the same time.

When used on a desktop you boot up in to your regular operating system and launch VMWare where you can load up another operating system within a window. VMWare want this same kind of functionality on phones allowing both a personal and a work operating system to be used on a single phone at the same time. Right now the only way two operating systems can happen is by dual booting the phone which is limited in that you have to choose one or the other OS, but not both. [Read more…]

Google Maps Navigation out of US Gets Blocked

Google-Maps-NavigationWe wrote a few weeks back about how to get Google Maps Navigation to work for Android users outside of the US. Navigation worked great and was very functional. However, as can be expected, Google have externally closed the loophole preventing users from using the service outside of the US. When loading up navigation now you get simple message saying “No Route Found – Navigation to your Destination Not Possible”.

The thread on XDA Developers explains what is happening and what their teams are trying to do to get around it again. Ideas currently being worked on include looking in to using a proxy server to give the appearance to Google that you are in the US although I am sure it will be another cat and mouse game where users create a way around the restriction and Google in turn, close it off. Google Goggles Visual Search Launched

google-gogglesGoogle [GOOG] have launched a new web service for mobile phones called Google Goggles. The program is free and available now from the Android Market. What Google Goggles does is allow you to take a picture of an object and then Google uses the image to try find a match in it’s vast library of cached images. By mixing the captured image with GPS you also get location based services. An example here could be taking a picture of a shop front with Google then working out where you are and providing details on the local shop.

Although a fantastic idea, it currently is a bit limited and some captured images cannot be recognised. Objects not capable of being recognised could include furniture, clothing etc… I just tested now on a LEXAR 1GB SSD card and within a few seconds the search resulted in a number of LEXAR products being shown which was quite impressive.
