HTC Flyer Tablet with Android 2.4 Announced

HTC has announced a new tablet device called the HTC Flyer. The Flyer has a 7 inch touchscreen that is also compatible with stylus input. It runs Android 2.4 which is an update to Gingerbread, but still called Gingerbread that brings Android 3.0 Honeycomb elements to the backend.

The tablet is also the first ever tablet that runs the HTC Sense UI. The stylus uses an active digitizer that makes it compatible with the capacitive touchscreen. By including this, they allow for those who want to use a tablet to scribble notes on with a pen rather than finger. [Read more…]

Android 2.4 Could Make an Early Appearance as Gingerbread

New information today reveals that Google might be releasing a new version of Android as early as April. The new version will be designed for smartphones and will follow along with the 2.X branch being called Android 2.4. Here’s something interesting though as it is now believed that Google will call Android 2.4 Gingerbread even though Gingerbread already exists as 2.3.

The reasons for this seem to follow along with how Android 3.0 Honeycomb apps will work in that dual-core apps designed for Honeycomb will then be made compatible with single-core apps on devices running Android 2.4. This, apparently, is not possible with Android 2.3 in its current form. [Read more…]

Android 3.0 Honeycomb Not Just for Tablets

Earlier today we posted that Android 3.0 Honeycomb had some hints in the SDK that it would work on smartphone sized devices as well. This was found, thanks to the emulator that allowed the resolution to be set at a smartphone size rather than a large tablet size.

In an interview with All Things D, one of the guys from Google, Matias Duarte, said the following…

“Tablet was the focus, but the changes we did also free it up to be more flexible for other contexts as well, it’s about really eliminating all the barriers to all the different kinds of form factors that people might want to interact with.”
