Huawei S7 Preview

The Huawei S7 is an Android based tablet that has a 7 inch screen and sits in-between the likes of the Apple iPad and the Dell Streak.

One of the main problems with the Huawei S7 is that it appears the nice capacitive touchscreen that we expected to see has been replaced with a resistive screen which just doesn’t work that well on Android based devices. Hopefully the review unit is just a one off and that the S7 will have capacitive screens.

Battery life is also a downer with tests showing that just over 1.5 hours of active use can be achieved which is way below the 10 hours that other devices set. [Read more…]

We’ve heard twice in the last couple of weeks that we will be seeing Microsoft [MSFT] launch Windows Phone 7 sometime in October. Prior to that it was expected the launch would be closer to the end of the year.

The first time we heard an October launch date was when the HTC Mozart WP7 device was spotted with a bad photoshop done on a slightly different handset. The Samsung Galaxy S is a powerful smartphone. We’ve heard over the last few months that the device is capable of shifting a lot of triangles per second. When compared to the iPhone 3GS, it can shift just over 3 times more per second at 90 million.

This comparison shows the Samsung Galaxy S vs the HTC Desire with each smartphone running Quake 2. Technical spec wise, the Samsung Galaxy S uses a Hummingbird/Power VR chipset. The HTC Desire has a Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1GHz and an Adreno chip. Both configurations are quite respectable although you’ll sure see a difference when you see them side by side. [Read more…]

Google Nexus Two and Google Branded Chrome OS Netbook Not Happening

Google [GOOG] was asked recently if a Google Nexus Two Android device was going to launch. In short, the answer is no. The details came from an interview with Eric Schmidt where he was asked about the possibility of a Nexus Two smartphone branded by Google.

The reason for not creating a Nexus Two is due to how successful the Nexus One was, not in terms of how many sold, but more of moving hardware developers on to creating better hardware. We have certainly seen an amazing set of Android smartphones launch after the Nexus One, so in that respect we agree with them about that.

It is also believed that a Google branded Chrome OS netbook also wont be happening. Reasons for this is that the PC industry is used to working with Microsoft (a strong software provider) which means the hardware is more up to scratch unlike how Google felt about the Android hardware prior to the Nexus One. Apple Letter Regarding Signal Strength on iPhone 4 Published

Apple [AAPL] has put out a formal letter regarding the signal problems on the iPhone 4 although it tackles the issue from a slightly different angle from what you might expect and Apple won’t actually fix anything with the signal other than how signal strength is reported.

What the problem seems to be (according to Apple) is the signal meter that sits at the top left of the screen. Apple admitted that they have used the wrong formula to calculate signal strength that reports the signal being a lot higher than it actually is. The meter actually reports a lot more signal than it should and when there is a slight drop in signal, it can look a lot more dramatic than it actually is. This reporting method and formula was used on all generations of the iPhone and a fix is being sent out in a few weeks to report the signal correctly. [Read more…]
