Nokia Ovi Maps heads to Alpine Car System

Alpine have announced plans to partner with Nokia to integrate Ovi Maps in to their in-car head units. The new “connected technology” is being called Terminal Mode and will bring navigation that uses NAVTEQ maps in to cars.

As well as bringing free satellite navigation in to vehicles the new systems also make use of widget-based services that also bring entertainment such as movies and MP3 audio to cars. Other features include weather reports as well as being able to use the phone within as an actual phone to make and receive calls.

The possibilities don’t end there either as the device will have a GPS for tracking purposes along with data connectivity the system will be able to keep track of fuel stations near by allowing you to quickly find the cheapest place to fill up. Also by interfacing the car with the computer the fuel levels and engine status can also be tracked allowing you to have all details of your car in the one location. Other features could see you receiving vouchers for discounts on local stores as you pass by them. [Read more…]

Google Street View Images Could be Updated every 6 Months – EU Demands

Google Street View has caused a bit of a stir from time to time as some users feel it’s a little intrusive having a camera capture pictures of your home. Generally though it seems like most people actually think it’s a cool service to use.

Google [GOOG] had plans to update the images every 12 months when the service launched although this could be reduced in the EU has it’s way. The 12 monthly updates would allow Google to capture changes in scenery and buildings that have occurred over the year. However, due to various privacy reasons the EU want it changing to the 6 months we mentioned which could lead to great expense for Google to effectively double it’s efforts to achieve the same work. Unifeye Mobile Augmented Reality SDK

The Unifeye Mobile Augmented Reality SDK has been launched that allows iPhone and Android developers to more easily create augmented reality applications on smartphones.

The new system is demonstrated on the video below and shows how augmented reality scenes can be created more easily. It uses a number of systems to function such as the latest image recognition technologies along with 3D rendering allowing for real-time interaction with various things.

The demonstration shows how pointing the camera of your smartphone on to a magazine could pop up a 3D set of drawers to move around. Other ideas show 3D cars being looked at in magazines and also even giving the option to create augmented reality games with your own environment. [Read more…]

TomTom’s IQ Routes Reveal US Aren’t Speeding

TomTom uses a system called IQ Routes that uses real time and historical data to calculate the optimal route to your destination. By recording speeds of traffic at all times of the day the system knows which roads are slow and which route will get you to your destination the quickest. Two years worth of data has been collected with average speeds being calculated on free flowing highways in the US and the data reveals that people in the US don’t speed in general.

The report found that in some cases, speed limits were exceeded but in general the average speed was below the limits imposed on the roads tracked. Although we mentioned IQ Routes in the title of this post and the post it’s self, the data is actually calculated using data from Speed Profiles who provide the historical database to TomTom and integrated as IQ Routes. The data is collected anonymously from GPS units sat in cars that are connected up via a mobile phone’s data plan so real time information can be collected. [Read more…]

Parking Pilot Helps you Park the Car

The Parking Pilot is a device that assists people to park their cars more easily. It uses the traditional ultrasonic sensors that you see on the back of a number of cars, but inside it uses a few more graphics to help you judge the distances more easily.

The gadget is on sale over at Chinavasion and therefore it can be expected to be a bit different to a traditional gadget and in this case the Parking Pilot also has a breathalyser built in so you know if you are over the limit. [Read more…]

Google Earth Satnav System Heading to Audi A8

audi-a8-google-earth_2Audi are about to introduce a Google Earth based sat nav system in to their A8 Saloon cars. This will be the first time Google Earth has been installed in to a production car officially.

As well as having the fancy Google Earth imagary the Audi A8 will also support a standard hard disk based system I assume for those times when the car’s GPRS/EDGE connectivity is lost.

By using Google Earth based navigation, drivers will get higher performance graphics that will show 3D buildings, landscapes as well as gradients and terrain modelling. [Read more…]

Layar 3.0 brings more Layers to Augmented Reality

abbey-road-realityAugmented Reality is a way of overlaying information on a computer screen on top of real time images. A company in Amsterdam have just released the latest version of Layar called Layar 3.0 that ads more data on to real-world images giving a unique experience when using the software.

The software has already been released for Android 1.5 and 1.6 users with a version compatible with 2.0 coming soon. Also, the iPhone version has been created but is just awaiting approval from Apple which as soon as it gets clearance it will be available for download. [Read more…]

Augmented Reality Car System Sees Through Walls

ar-system-to-see-through-wallsAugmented Reality has a number of uses related to vehicles such as BMW’s concept of unskilled people being able to fix car’s by wearing a headset that shows you the steps you need to take to fix a faulty part.

Another use of augmented reality I came across today was that of a car system that allows the driver to see around bends. The system uses two cameras with one recording what the driver sees and another recording what’s hidden behind a corner. By mixing the two images together the driver is able to see a transparent building that reveals what is behind allowing you to drive more safely. The images are superimposed on each other and the second remote cameras image is then adjusted to fit in to perspective with what the driver would see, should the building not be there. [Read more…]

The Realistic Digital Slot Car Raceway

digital_slotcarsThe common slot cars are controlled by a single button that can variablly control the speed of the car dependend on how hard you press it. The aim is to get around the track repeatidly as fast as you can without being thrown off on a corner.

A new version of the classic slot cars have been made and it’s called The Realistic Digital Slot Car Raceway. The difference here is that you have to do more than just drive around the track repeatidly. In this version you have to drive around the track and be concious of your fuel consumption, braking responsiveness as well as pit rules. When your car is full of fuel (shown on the large digital display), your car will drive slower because of the extra weight. Drive through the pits too fast then you might get a time penalty. Augmented Reality brings Google Earth to Life

Google-Earth-Augmented-RealityAlthough Google Earth is a fantastic program allowing you to quickly zoom in and out of most of the earth with an excellent amount of detail, what it still lacks is life as everything you look at is static.

A new system being tested brings real time events to Google Earth to make an augmented reality. Examples of this working could be zooming in to a road to see cars driving and pedestrians walking. The data used to generate this information actually captures the current live traffic and current locations of pedestrians to let you know how busy a certain area is. Another example allows you to zoom in to a football stadium and actually see a clip from several angles of people playing football. [Read more…]

Solar-Panel Roads to Provide Power

solarroadwaysRoads generally aren’t interesting. They are just tarmac, asphalt or some similar material tough enough to take the constant hammering of cars driving over them for several years. A company based in Idaho named Solar Roadways intend to let roads be more useful than before by creating them as sections of solar panels that are strong enough to take a car driving on them, yet useful enough to power about 500 homes per mile of roadway (4 lanes). The company have been given a $100,000 grant to come up with a successful prototype.

The road system is built of 12′ x 12′ panels costing $7000 each and they are designed to replace the normal covering on roads and car parks. As well as covering the road and providing 7.6KWh for each panel the roads could have LED’s embedded in to create warning signs and mark the roads rather than using paint. [Read more…]
