BMW Support iPod Out on iOS 4

When Apple [AAPL] announced iOS 4 they said a large number of enhancements had been included. These of course include multitasking as well as many other popular features that have been publicly known. Another one of the new features is called iPod Out which appears to have been overlooked somewhat. Thankfully, BMW has an all seeing eye and spotted the new feature allowing them to create quite a decent interface for their cars.

iPod Out is a function that enables an external screen to display and control music playback. Docking an iPhone running iOS 4 for example, could allow a car to have a screen installed and all the iPod controls appear on screen within the car.

BMW will be doing this with their BMW and Mini entertainment systems. The iPod Out function works on any iOS 4 device which includes the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 and iPod touch second and third generation. [Read more…]

Google Street View Gets Moving Again

Google [GOOG] recently grounded all it’s street view cars globally due to the company capturing WiFi data whilst driving about the globe. Changes have been made by Google which see’s the WiFi scanning equipment removed from cars as well as the software used to capture the data.

The WiFi data collection equipment has been removed from our cars in each country and the independent security experts Stroz Friedberg have approved a protocol to ensure any WiFi-related software is also removed from the cars before they start driving again.

What this means is that with new protocols in place, the company is now about to re-send out cars in various countries. Asphalt 5 on Nokia N8 Video Demo

The Nokia N8 looks to be quite a nice smartphone despite the early review of a leaked model.

The video below was provided by Gameloft and shows Asphalt 5 running on the Nokia smartphone. If real, it looks quite amazing. We just mentioned “if real” in that SlashGear rightly point out that the game “might” be rendered or perhaps not showing it actually on a Nokia N8. There are no disclaimers to say other wise, so perhaps it is the real deal. [Read more…]

Horizon H-Cell 2.0 Hydrogen Fuel Cell now Available

Back in February we mentioned the Horizon H-Cell 2.0 Hydrogen Fuel Cell. At that time it had a launch date for March detailed. We hear now, after a short wait, that it is now available to purchase.

The Hydrogen Cell kit is designed for radio controlled cars. The RC car required needs to be 1/10 in scale and the kit fits in most models although in some cases of smaller car body shells, they might need to be slightly adjusted to accommodate.

Some impressive numbers show that the Horizon H-Cell 2.0 can keep a car moving at 45MPH or more for up a full hour which is quite impressive considering a battery powered only version would only go for single digit minutes. [Read more…]

Smart Car gets Smartest Apple iPhone App

We don’t normally cover information about cars here at gadgetvenue, but for this new Apple iPhone app we thought it was worth a mention due to it being an in-car app for the iPhone.

The application is called Smartest and it’s a dock and application that integrates with your Smartcar. The application has been designed to be used in a car and thus, the icons are larger as well as the text larger and less clutter is to be found on the screen to avoid distracting the driver.

Functions include the ability to play your music over the cars internal radio. The application integrates with the music found on your iPhone and lets you browse through it to play it back in the car. It makes for a good music player. Another interesting application built in is internet radio that lets you stream music from radio stations around the globe to your iPhone and in turn, this is output to the speakers on the car. Google Street View Cover the Whole UK (well, 96%)

Google [GOOG] have now updated the UK maps with 96% coverage of the UK in Street View. There’s just a few streets missing as of now, but generally the whole UK is covered.

This allows Google Streetview users to view almost any street in the UK from the eyes of cameras that have been mounted on cars for the last 18 months or so and immerse themselves in to the streets around them (or anywhere else).

Google came under fire though due to Streetview with some people believing it was too obtrusive. However, most people feel it’s quite a cool feature to have and I have to admit it’s an impressive undertaking to get the whole of the UK covered. [Read more…]
