The slide, pictured larger below, shows what the future might look like for those wanting to access the internet on a mobile phone.

The slide comes from a powerpoint presentation that was sent in to Wired recently. What it shows is a plan that could see mobile operators charging per service for that what you use on your smartphone. Examples show Facebook being charged at 2 cents per MB of data while Skype would cost you 3/month to use and YouTube, a restricted version, would cost 50 cents per month. [Read more…]

Integrated SIM Card for iPhone Scrapped – Could Still Happen in iPad

Just a few weeks ago, we reported that Apple [AAPL] was working on an integrated SIM card that could potentially cut the carriers out of the buying loop. What an integrated SIM card would do is come “blank” and when the phone is first used, you get to chose from a list of carriers which one you want to join and what price plan on. This in turn would prevent the need for Orange, O2 and others from selling the phone as essentially, they wouldn’t be needed as such (other than providing a price plan of course).

It seems that Apple will not actually be going down this route any more now due to backlash from carriers. One particular carrier is believe to have said…

“Apple has long been trying to build closer and closer relationships and cut out the operators. But this time they have been sent back to the drawing board with their tails between their legs.”

This follows on from what Apple [AAPL] is believed to be doing in their collaboration with Gemalto. Although the idea is good in some ways, ie, you don’t need to worry about a SIM card, it potentially will lead to a whole host of problems for users. [Read more…]

Dell Venue Pro WP7 MicroSD Card Slot – Covered by Warranty Sticker

WMPoweruser has spotted the microSD card slot on the Dell Venue Pro Windows Phone 7 smartphone. Unlike some other WP7 devices where the card slot is buried deep within the hardware, Dell has made the microSD card slot some what accessible when only taking the back cover off.

However, there is a snag here in that the microSD card slot is actually covered by a warranty sticker. Basically, that means that if you decide to mess with the microSD card slot and increase the memory capacity of the device, you’ll end up voiding your warranty on the phone. [Read more…]
