The TVs in this car a little Excessive

in car TV
With the thin LCD type screens now being more affordable it has opened up a ton of uses. Over the last few years we have seen cars with screens in various places. It makes you wonder how many is too much in a car? If I was to have screens in a car I would probably stick a couple in the headrests for the kids to watch and one in the dash if it was for sat nav. I think this one above takes it a little too far though 😉 Surely the new UK highway code has something against this. What happened to the days of playing “I spy with my little eye” or singing “Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?” Oh well, I guess those days are over. I wonder when cars will come standard and packed full of screens.

Opal have created a cool little concept car which runs by battery. It can do just over 60 miles on its lithium ion batteries and there is a small diesel engine which also can recharge them. With both working together you can get around 500 miles out of it. The engine is a 1.3L turbo diesel engine which can run up to 3200rpm. Another cool feature is the ability to store two segways in the back which are constantly on charge. When you arrive at your destination you just whip them out and cruise along.

Seam Carving – Chopping Up your Images in Style

Retargeted Image
I came across a cool video today from SIGGRAPH 2007 which shows a process to manipulate images with out having to chop them up the usual way. The process uses gradients to find continuous lines of pixels which can be removed without effecting the subjects of the image. When the subject of the image does get manipulated for some reason, a marker can be put on to the image telling it to preserve that part. Also, objects can easily be removed by marking them negatively. The software will then take the gradients near by to fill in the gaps.

This type of manipulation will be very useful for websites which can be displayed on various sized screens such as high res large monitors right down to pocket pc sized screens. The full effect of the image could be displayed with out cropping out the main parts of the image.

Car Sandwich Maker

Car Toasty Maker
When you are out for a long drive and suddenly crave a cheese toasted sandwich then this one built for a car could come to the rescue. It plugs in to your lighter socket on your car and can create some seriously nice sandwiches anywhere you are parked. Although its a real bizarre idea, I could actually see a good use when you are parked up somewhere on a long day out in the cold and you just want something warm to keep you going.

The sandwich maker for your car will cost you $18 in the sale over at skingcompany.

Nissan Makes an In Car Breathalyzer

In Car Breathalyzer

In Car Breathalyzer will not allow the car to start if intoxicated

Nissan have created an in car breathalyzer which prevents the car from being started if the person driving is over the limit. The sensor is required to be used before the car starts and will not start until a person under the limit is tested. This is a nice step forwards and helps those driving know if they should drive, and prevents them if they shouldnt. Of course it could be bypassed by having someone else use the breathalyzer… but hopefully all those under the limit would be smart enough to say no to a request like that from a drunk person.

Toyota have also been working on a system, but this time it uses sweat sensors on the steering wheel which take blood alcohol reading while driving. Using this information with a mixture of steering patterns and a test on your pupils while driving it could be set to immobilise the car while driving.

These systems should be available over the next couple of years and might one day become standard in cars to help prevent dangerous driving while intoxicated.

Secure your car with the Violent Steering Wheel

WORLD’S MOST VIOLENT STEERING WHEEL !!! – video powered by Metacafe

Thieves will have no chance with the violent steering wheel

A guy from Ohio has created a secure steering wheel which when touched it violently spins around making the car impossible to drive away. I am guessing it could also break your wrist depending on how powerful the motor that controls it is. With it being custom built there is no information if any of the car companies would use or want something like this in their cars.
