This week has seen a few announcements about the new Nokia N9. First we heard that it wasn’t going to be going to the US. We then heard the N9 wouldn’t launch in the UK. We now hear that it isn’t going to Germany.

Nokia N9 Will Launch in 49 Days
Nokia has announced that the Nokia N9 will launch in 49 days from now. A dedicated web site has been created which features a countdown timer showing how long is left till the official launch.
Apple Appears to Have Approved some iOS 5 Apps
iOS 5 is currently on version beta 4 which is still a few steps away from launch. However, it appears that some apps are beginning to get approved for iOS 5. The images below show the Camera+ app and the Mashable app which both make mention of the new OS.
Skype To Bring Video Calling to Windows Phone 7
By the end of 2011 you will more than likely be able to use Skype on your Windows Phone 7 smartphone to make video calls. This assumes you have a front facing camera of course.
Microsoft is currently hiring someone “…for building and optimizing the Skype Video Engine solution for Microsoft Windows and Windows Phone platforms.”. This strongly indicates that Skype video calling will be coming soon to WP7 smartphones.
Microsoft and Nokia Event Being Held on August 17
In a few weeks time on August 17, Nokia and Microsoft will be holding a special event. The event is being held in Cologne, Germany at the GamesCon trade fair. It isn’t fully known how many Nokia/WP smartphones will be on show at the event, ie… which smartphone will be revealed, but what we do see is the Nokia and Windows Phone logo on show which guarantees that we’ll see where Nokia is at with the new operating system while also getting launch details of the device.
Skype for iPad Launched
Earlier this morning Skype launched a native app for the iPad. Unfortunately it was pulled out of the app store moments later and then followed by a tweet saying:
To ensure your best Skype experience, we’ve temporarily removed Skype for iPad which went live prematurely today.
Good new though as a quick check of the app store shows that it is available again (at least here in the UK where I am testing it now).
iPhone 5 Now Rumoured to get October Launch
Prior to the launch of any popular gadget, rumours start going around about potential release dates. Last week, we heard a lot about September being the month, but now we are hearing that October will be the month that the iPhone 5 launches.
Samsung Galaxy R Android Smartphone Confirmed
As well as confirming the white Galaxy S II today, Samsung has also confirmed the Samsung Galaxy R. The new smartphone is runs the Android 2.3 gingerbread operating system and has a 4.19 inch Super Clear LCD display. The resolution of the screen is 800 x 480 pixels.
Microsoft Update Brings RAW Image Format Support to PC
Microsoft has released a codec pack update for Windows 7 that can read RAW format images captured on 120 digital SLR cameras. When downloaded, the new codec allows users to use Explorer or Photo Gallery to view the images. Prior to this update RAW format users had to use other 3rd party software to quickly see the images.
