Development on Snap Pixy Selfie Drone Stopped

Back in April, Snap launched the Pixy, which is a small drone used for capturing selfies. Sadly, development is now being stopped, according to WSJ.

The Pixy was cool because it was autonomous. It had two cameras. One facing forward to capture pictures and video of you, and a camera facing down so that it can see the ground and hold the drone in place, similar to how the Tello drone works.

There were different modes that you could set, and when it’s ready to launch you just push a button and off it goes while capturing video and pictures of you.

Flying Basketball Hoop Catches All Shots

The Stuff Made Here YouTube channel shows some impressive engineering skills, with one of the more recent videos showing a basketball hoop that moves in six dimensions (check out the video if that makes no sense). The hoop is attached to wires that pull it around at speed to capture the ball wherever it is thrown in a room.

iPhone 14 Event Coming Soon

If Apple keeps to the schedule of launch events for the iPhone over the last few years, then we can expect the iPhone 14 to be announced, and likely be launched sometime in September. The predicted date is currently September 7 for the announcement, and likely open for pre-orders a few days later.

We can probably expect the usual updates such as better cameras, a faster processor, as well as some cosmetic changes. Listing those changes doesn’t particularly sound too exciting, although for those who keep hold of their iPhones for a few years at a time, a speed bump and better camera is always welcome.

The Pen Sized Scanner With Laser Guides

This pen shaped scanner allows you to conveniently and quickly capture text on a page by simply hovering the pen over the document.

Integrated in to the pen is a 5 megapixel camera capable of capturing images at a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. Although the laser guide looks a little fake on the image below, we actually hear that the pen does this to some extent. What you do is hold the pen a few inches above the page, push the scan button half way to enable the laser guide, match up the area you want to scan and then push the button all the way to capture the shot.

The Superior Slide and Negative to Digital Picture Converter

If you search around your loft or basement for long enough, you’ll probably come across some old slides and negatives from pictures you took before digital cameras took off. These pictures often get damaged over time and if left out in sunlight, they also fade away gradually and lose colour.

The “Superior Slide and Negative to Digital Picture Converter” is a device that is able to capture images from negatives and slides at a resolution of 14 megapixels.

JackPod Smartphone Tripod Mount

The JackPod is another great idea that I just came across on Kickstarter. It is a device that you plug in to the 3.5mm headphone jack on your smartphone and use that as a mounting point for a tripod.

The details show that it can mount any smartphone that uses any case safely on to a tripod so you can get steadier shots.

Luxi Incident Light Meter for iPhone is a Cheaper Alternative

Taking picture on a DSLR can be challenging to some as there are a number of settings that need to be taken in to account such as shutter speed, ISO and aperture all of which need to be balanced to get just the right amount of light to the sensor without making the shutter open so long that you get blurry images. Under or over exposed images are also too easy to create if settings are not correct for the environment around you.

A traditional way of working with this challenge is either by experience gained over a number of years, or by using an expensive light meter that can detect the light around you and provide the settings you need.

To lower the cost of light meters, one company is launching a device called Luxi that attaches to the front facing camera on your iPhone. It is compatible with the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5 and fits snugly over the camera. You then fire up an app and can find the best settings for the current lighting available.

This little device is a submarine camcorder that is capable of moving 100 feet underwater and streaming back what it sees live to an iPad. The RC submarine is handy for those who regularly travel the waters so that they have a way to inspect below a boat or see marine life.

After many months of speculation and leaks, most of which were correct I might add, the iPhone 5 has finally been announced. The new smartphone is called the iPhone 5 and brings several new things to the iPhone range.

iPhone 5 event announced for September 12 by Apple

Apple has sent out invites to a press event which will be held on September 12. As seen in the image below, the phrase “It’s almost here.” is used along with a 12 although the shadow is a number 5 which strongly hints at Apple calling the new phone, assuming it is a phone that is announced, an iPhone 5.

iPad mini mockup created

Although no official announcement has been made about the existance of an iPad mini, it still hasn’t stopped a ton of rumours about it as well as supposed part leaks. The latest I saw today was a mockup of what the iPad mini might look like. To be honest, it’s pretty much what I expected it to be with thinner bezels around the sides and larger bezels on the top and bottom.
