iPhone 3 Rumour Round-up

Rumours have mentioned an upgraded camera, front camera for video calls, relocated higher speaker, ability to send recorded videos, video uploading direct to Youtube, OLED screen, faster wi-fi and 3G speeds, HD Video support, improved battery life with % indicator, digital compass, Nike+ support, matt rubber backing, Adobe Flash support, 32GB of storage and improved RAM. The image above shows a few more and the colour coding represents the probability with green being a very likely down to orange being less likely.

WickedLasers Photonic Disruptor Review

WickedLasers asked if we could review another of their high powered laser pens. Of course I said yes as no matter how many laser pens I have seen in the past I still find they are very cool (although dangerous if not used correctly). The laser is named the Photonic Disruptor and unlike every other laser that requires safety specks to be worn to protect the eyes, the disruptor is supposed to be aimed at people’s eyes to temporarily disorient them. In the words of WickedLasers it is described as…

an extremely effective, non-lethal, waterproof high powered green laser built specifically for rugged, harsh environments. This laser is classified as TALI¢ (Threat Assessment Laser Illuminator)…. This tactical laser is equipped with versatile focus-adjustable collimating lenses to compensate for range and power intensity. Laze a non-lethal focused or unfocused beam towards potential threats at a distance. Used properly, the Photonic Disruptor¢ will temporarily overwhelm a threats visual senses without causing permanent eye damage.

iPhone 3 Specs Leaked

new-iphone-3It appears that some specs have leaked about the latest iPhone that is rumoured to be announced next month. The rumour comes from a Chinese Apple website and includes a picture of the technical specs. Specifications include a 32GB storage capacity, 600 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM.

If the rumours are true then we should be in for a snappier iPhone. To be honest it’s no real surprise that they would be bumping up the specs. The main questions left unanswered are what it will look like and if a hardware keyboard will be included. I don’t personally think they will bother with a keyboard, but I imagine that a slightly refined design in a similar shape and size to the current model will be in store. [Read more…]

BUGlabs Modular Gadget Factory

buglabs_bug_bundleThinkGeek are now selling BUGLabs. BUG’s are various items which can either secure things, track things with GPS, read barcodes, draw pictures, update Twitter and control robots. The BUGS snap together in a modular type way and once connected you create some simple JAVA to control the devices. The system is open-source meaning you also get access to a bunch of enthusiastic developers.

Because BUG is open-source, it doesn’t impede your creativity. If you’ve got an idea for a gadget, it’s easy to throw it together. For example, your garden is being chomped on by some unseen entity. Snap a motion-detector and a camera onto the BUGbase, write some Java, and you’ve got gadget that’ll catch the family of deer that roams through your yard. Unhappy with Google maps street view? Snap on the GPS module and the camera, and code your BUG to take geotagged photos at specific intervals and roll your own. Got an RC helicopter? Snap on the vonHippel breakout-board module and the touch-screen module and code an interface to fly your helicopter on your BUG. Are you a cartographer? Snap the GPS and the touch-screen modules on, a smidgen of Java, walk to the corners of your property, and bang zoom, you’ve got a map.

Verizon to get Samsung Alias 2

samsung-alias-2Verizon have announced that they have launched the Samsung Alias 2. The Alias 2 is a dual hinged clamshell phone which has a unique keyboard that is actually E-Ink. The keyboard is QWERTY and with each key using E-Ink it can quickly transform in to a different layout. The overall effect is actually quite good and because e-ink doesn’t require much power to work (ie, only when changing the state) it doesn’t provide any major impact to the phones battery life.
