Apple TV Refresh Could Be Announced Alongside New iPad

Apple could be about to refresh the Apple TV. By saying Refresh, I mean that it could be another set-top box that is launching rather than a full Apple TV that has been rumoured for the last few months. That particular model is still about a year away if rumours are to be believed.

Apple Looking for TV Components

Ever since the Steve Jobs biography was released and the comment about him finally cracking the TV, we’ve heard a ton of rumours about what the new Apple TV will be like and when it will be launching. The latest report now indicates that Apple [AAPL] is actively seeking component suppliers for building a TV. This has been labelled as more evidence of Apple building a TV. Please note that the Apple TV and new Apple TV are different in that the current generation model is a device that connects to a regular TV. The new Apple TV is a whole TV that will have iOS integrated. A mockup/render is found below.

Apple Could Add Thunderbolt in iOS Devices

New patents published in the US hint that iOS devices could be getting a Thunderbolt port. One of the patents says “a connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display, a computer and a portable media player, or between other types of devices.” which has led a number of people to believe that this will include iOS devices.

Refunds Issued by Apple for GameStore App

Over the new year, Apple accidentally released an app called GameStore that was very unfinished. It was believed to be from 2009 at about the time in-app purchases were made available. Apple [AAPL] shortly after pulled the app from the store. A number of people paid for the app to see what it was.

GameStore Test App Accidentally Released by Apple

It appears that Apple has accidentally released a test app in to the App Store. The test app is called GameStore and is a very simple app that appears to test the ability to use in-app purchases on the iPhone. The app costs 99 cents and allows users to test in-app purchases and other than that… it does nothing else.

Apple Releases a new iOS 5.0.1 Build for the iPhone 4S

A new iOS 5.0.1 update has been made available for download for those with an iPhone 4S. You’ll probably be aware that Apple has already released the 5.0.1 update just a few weeks ago. This new version has just a few tweaks and is available for those who haven’t updated to 5.0.1 just yet.

Apple Hires iOS 5 Concept Designer

Apple [AAPL] is always looking to improve the UI on it’s iOS devices. Although what they have created works well in most cases, there’s always room for improvement. Each time we see a concept UI idea, particularly from Jan-Michael Cart, we always think there’s plenty of room for improvement.

Good news is that Apple has hired Jan-Michael as an intern for seven months. Jan-Michael has created a number of Youtube videos that show some simple design tweaks to make iOS a little better.

Google Majel to Tackle Apple Siri

Google [GOOG] is believed to be working on a new voice system for Android. The system is codenamed Majel after the voice of the Federation computers on Star Trek. Majel is the next step in voice support for Android devices and will follow on from Google Voice Actions. Rather than just repeating set instructions such as “Sent text to fred”, Majel will follow more closely with Siri and allow certain variations so that more natural language can be used.
