Apple Blocks iPhone 4 Jailbreak in Stores

Earlier this week the iPhone 4 jailbreak was released. The new jailbreak for iPhone doesn’t require that you tether your phone to your computer to run it. Instead, you just load up a website in Safari on the iPhone and slide a button that jailbreaks the iPhone from the browser (thanks to a PDF exploit).

To show how easy it is to perform the jailbreak, someone managed to capture a video of himself jailbreaking an iPhone 4 demo model in an Apple [AAPL] store. [Read more…]

Apple App Store Try Before you Buy Added

Apple [AAPL] has added a new section to the iPhone app store called “Try Before You Buy”. The title of it makes you think that apps will come free for maybe a couple of hours or couple of days at which point you can choose not to purchase them, or choose to purchase them.

However, it’s nothing like that at all unfortunately. Instead, what you get is just a list of “Lite” apps that give you a taster of what an app is about. These types of Lite apps have been around for a while now and simply provide a single level of a game, or limited functionality allowing you to test and then upgrade to the full version if you wish to keep it.

With that in mine, the “Try Before You Buy” section is merely a way to group all the free “Lite” apps under one list. [Read more…]

Apple Peel 520 iPod touch Phone Case

The Apple Peel 520 case is designed for the iPod touch and has been designed to turn the iPod touch in to an iPhone. The case of course is not an official Apple [AAPL] product and from what we have heard, it isn’t 100% perfect, but it does allow you to put a SIM card inside the case and make calls from the iPod touch.

Price wise, it will set you back about $57 when it launches although the product reviewed over at PCOnline is a prototype as the final models are not ready for launch just yet. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 PDF Flaw has a Fix Ready says Apple

Apple [AAPL] has already managed to patch the security hole found in the iPhone 4 PDF function. This particular security hole allows software such as Jailbreakme to work that in turn, allows you to run the iPhone 4 jailbreak although there is also the possibility that malicious code could also be injected in to iOS with the security hole in place.

Apple will be releasing iOS 4.1 soon which will include a security fix within the PDF feature. In turn, this will also prevent the jailbreak from working for those who update to iOS 4.1.

Apple said in a statement… “We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.” [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Jailbreak PDF Exploit – Apple Investigating

It was revealed this week that the iPhone 4 jailbreak uses an exploit found in the PDF code. When a web browser opens a PDF file, it allows code to be injected and executed which in turn, allows the jailbreak to happen. On the downside, the flaw in the PDF code also will allow malicious websites to link to PDF websites for other code to be injected that can actually cause harm to your iPhone 4.

Apple [AAPL], as expected, is looking in to the issue and we assume that by the time the iOS 4.1 update arrives in a few weeks time that the hole will be sealed preventing the iPhone 4 jailbreak in it’s current form from working for those who upgrade to iOS 4.1. [Read more…]

Apple Store iPhone 4 Demo Unit Jailbroken

The iPhone 4 jailbreak launched yesterday and along with that launch came an even easier way to jailbreak your device. Rather than downloading an app on to your PC or Mac, you simply visit a website in Safari on your iPhone 4, slide a slide to jailbreak button and away it goes.

This simple approach to jailbreaking the iPhone 4 means that even the in store demo units at Apple stores can be jailbroken as demoed in the video below.

The jailbreak was done by an Apple [AAPL] fan who visited a local Apple store and captured the whole process on camera. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 2 Could Get Camera

Update: This is probably just a copy/paste error from iPhone documents although it is still believed that an iPad 2 is being worked on and it will likely contain a camera. Original post below…

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Apple [AAPL] launched the iPad and already the second generation model is being looked forwards to. It is expected that Apple will launch a new iPad next year and follow on like the iPhone in terms of a yearly product release.

What we can expect from the iPad 2 is a follow on from the iPhone 4 in that it will feature a front facing camera, a retina display (of course a higher res than it currently is due to the larger screen) with perhaps sensors such as a gyroscope built in. Design wise, we suspect Apple will keep the same design for a couple of generations.

In regards to the camera rumour, AppleInsider has found information in the iPad management profile policies that indicate the camera can be disabled… which indicates if the ability to disable it is there then the ability to enable it in future generations is also possible. [Read more…]

Apple to Investigate Slow iPhone 3G iOS 4 Problems

When Apple [AAPL] released iOS 4 for the iPhone 3G and 3GS a problem with the iPhone 3G was spotted in that the new OS made the user experience worse in that it ran slow and hesitated a lot.

Apple is aware of the reports and is looking into the matter, a spokeswoman told Digits.

The problems have been listed on the Apple forums since iOS 4 was launched, but have been generally overshadowed by the iPhone 4 antenna problems and generally took a back seat. As quoted above though, Digits managed to get a response from Apple that indicates the company is working on it. [Read more…]

Apple Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Pads get Update

Apple [AAPL] introduced the Apple Magic Trackpad yesterday that brings multi-touch gesture support to Macs. An update for the software has been provided that brings the version to 1.0.

The new $69 trackpad is a bluetooth device that connects up to a Mac and allows to use multi-touch gestures on the desktop allowing for far easier input in some cases.

As well as updating the software for the Magic Trackpad, the update also is available for the trackpad on the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro computers. [Read more…]

Apple iOS 4.1 Beta 2 Released for Developers

Apple [AAPL] has released the next Beta version of iOS 4.1 numbered Beta 2. The new beta brings a few changes to the original Beta of 4.1 that was released recently.

The iOS 4.1 build is available only for developers at the moment and can be installed on all compatible iPhones and iPod touches which includes the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 as well as later generation touches.

Items changed in the new beta 2 includes a new baseband for the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G which means you should hold off unlocking. Apple mentioned in the antenna conference the other week that they continually tweak the baseband to get better results, so we assume there will be some slight differences to antenna performance, but no where near a full fix as Steve Jobs confirmed it couldn’t be sorted with software. Apple Battery Charger Official

As well as introducing the Apple Magic Trackpad today, Apple [AAPL] also introduced a simple battery charger. The battery charger has been designed to be more efficient and is optimised for Apple-supplied batteries.

The battery charger has a system built in that allows the power needed to be reduced once the batteries are fully charged. Apple claim it is one of the most energy-efficient battery chargers available.

As well as working with the supplied batteries, you can also use any regular AA NiMH batteries inside it and it will also successfully charge them with the same energy efficient settings. [Read more…]

Apple Mac Pro Announced – Arriving August

Apple [AAPL] has announced the new Apple Mac Pro today along with several other new Apple products. The new Mac Pro is a powerful computer that can contain from 4, 6, 8 or 12 cores. The processors used to achieve this are the Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehamel” or the new “Westmere” series. The Mac Pro accepts up to two processors which means if you choose a 6-core Westmere you can have up to 12-cores running inside with a speed up to 2.93GHz. Other options with less cores take speeds up to 3.33GHz on the top end.

Many multicore processors are composed of two separate dies, which means some cached data has to travel outside the processor to get from core to core. That’s an inefficient way to access information. Enter the Quad-Core and 6-Core Intel Xeon processors. Their single-die, 64-bit architecture makes 8MB or 12MB of fully shared L3 cache readily available to each of the processor cores. The result is fast access to cache data and greater application performance. Combine that with the other technological advances and you get a Mac Pro that’s up to 1.5x faster than the previous generation.
