Apple TV Jailbreak Video Demonstration

It was confirmed a few days ago that the SHAttered tool can be used to jailbreak iOS 4.1 that is loaded on to the new generation Apple TV.

A video demonstration of this happening has now been uploaded to YouTube and shows a user logging in to the Apple TV and running commands as root.

SHAtter is a low level exploit that manages to break in to the Apple TV and other iOS 4.1 devices through a hardware issue. What this means is that Apple will not be able to patch the hole unless a new version with modified hardware ships. [Read more…]

Apple TV Reviewed

The Apple TV was reviewed by PC Mag recently. The new Apple TV allows you to stream media in to your home such as movies and TV shows.

The video review shows the interface and how everything works on the new service. In terms of how it works, it looks like the previous model. The speed of the interface is quick and playback of the demo films is also pretty much instant from what we can see.

Renting a movie also looks quick too in that you preview a video, click on a buy it button, enter your password and it sits for a few moments and then passes a message saying it is ready for download. [Read more…]

Apple TV Teardown

The next generation (2nd gen) Apple TV started shipping in the last few days. iFixit of course, managed to get it’s hands on one and has already taken it apart to see what exactly goes on inside.

The new Apple TV is far smaller than the original version that launched a few years ago. It runs iOS and is based around streaming content rather than storing content locally on internal memory.

Interesting information found about the Apple TV when tearing it down reveal that it has 256MB RAM just like the new iPod touch and iPad. The device also uses the same A4 processor package as is found in the iPad. [Read more…]

Apple TV Jailbreak Exploit

The Apple TV runs iOS 4.1, and because of that it means it can be jailbroke although official tests haven’t been performed yet.

The developer of the SHatter exploit, @pod2g, managed to use the SHatter code to decrypt the keys.

It’s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. Even though the new AppleTV isn’t yet in people’s homes, the firmware is available on Apple’s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys! The main filesystem (“Mojave8M89.K66OS”) key for 018-8609-066.dmg is:

Apple Patent Reveals New Camera System

A new patent application has been filed by Apple [AAPL] that shows a new camera system.

The new camera system uses a new camera flash that is optimised based on what the subject of the scene is. By using a flash redirector, imaging sensors that sense conditions and a touchscreen, it aims to capture better pictures.

The system might be used to direct more light to the dark parts of a photo to more evenly light the scene. If a dark spot is seen on the touchscreen, you could just tap to illuminate the dark portion. [Read more…]

Apple to build CDMA iPhone in December

Apple [AAPL] could start building the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 beginning in December this year. Apple Insider is reporting that the company will be getting 3 million of the said handsets ready for a launch in early 2011.

Analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro with Susquehanna Financial Group said in a note to investors on Wednesday that checks with overseas suppliers indicated Apple is prepared to build 3 million CDMA iPhones in December, keeping the device on track for an early 2011 launch. That would put total GSM and CDMA iPhone production for the quarter at between 21 million and 22 million.

Apple Patent Reveals Accessory Transceiver for iPod

Interesting information can be found whilst looking at patents filed. The latest we came across today comes from Apple [AAPL] that reveals plans for an accessory transceiver. The accessory transceiver could be used in the iPod touch which would effectively give it the ability to make phone calls and receive text messages.

It is believed that the device could act like the Peel case we wrote about a while back that you basically put your iPod inside to give it a mobile phone signal.

The device is not intended for just the iPod though and could potentially be used for the iPhone its self. You’re probably wondering at this point, why you’d want to add mobile phone functionality to a mobile phone… well, Apple also indicate that CDMA could be part of the device which would mean you could then use your iPhone on a different network to a GSM network. Apple iPad 2 Release Date: End of Q1 2011 – Rumour

Another rumour is going around about the iPad 2 release date. We have heard previously that a new iPad will be launched in November this year, then it was December and now it is end of Q1 2011.

Most people expect that Apple [AAPL] will release the iPad 2 based on how the iPhone and iPod touch gets updated, which is generally yearly. This would make it an early April launch for the iPad 2 which means Digitimes isn’t that far out with it’s guess. [Read more…]
