iPhone OS 4.0 Multitasking on iPhone 3G Can be Forced to Work

Yesterday when the new iPhone OS 4.0 was unveiled by Apple [AAPL], the announcement about multitasking was right at the top of the list and it sounded great until we then heard it only works on the Apple iPhone 3GS. This isn’t too bad as many people own the newer iPhone 3GS, but some people are still on the older iPhone 3G.

Some kind of good news has appeared today (unofficially) that says by a bit of hacking around you can actually get the iPhone 3G multitasking. This is achieved by making a setting change in a preference file called N82AP.plist where you set a value for multitasking to TRUE. Once done the service then becomes available.

To achieve this hack you’ll of course need to have access to the internals of the iPhone by jailbreaking it and the ability to know what to do although someone could probably create a simple program that can enable it for you in the near future. [Read more…]

iPhone OS 4.0 Release Date

Update: Apple has just announced that iPhone OS 4.0 (which has been renamed to iOS 4) will be launched on June 21. Click here for details.

Earlier today Apple [AAPL] announced iPhone OS 4. In the presentation they said the iPhone OS 4.0 release date was to be summer while the Apple iPad will get it in the fall, a few months later.

Reasons for the iPad delay are still unknown although we suspect they are tweaking iPhone OS 4.0 for the iPad to work things a little differently such as how the multitasking tray works.

With Apple only specifying summer as the iPhone OS 4.0 release date, that obviously puts it somewhere in June, July or August. We currently believe that the next gen iPhone (aka iPhone 4G or iPhone HD) is going to be announced early in summer, so we suspect that the iPhone OS 4.0 will be released along with the next gen iPhone. iPhone OS 4 Multitasking in Action

We just mentioned iPhone OS 4 and it’s new features that Apple [AAPL] announced today.

We just came across a video showing exactly how multitasking works on the iPhone. The video is below and shows the double tap on the home button where the running apps then slide up from the bottom of the screen. The option of sliding left and right is then given allowing you to choose which application you want to load.

Although it’s not the most ground breaking feature to hit a mobile phone, praise seems to need to go to Apple due to how they say it functions in that it doesn’t cause issues with the CPU or with memory limits from what we understand. Steve Jobs best described multitasking as follows… “It’s like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager… they blew it. Users shouldn’t ever have to think about it.” [Read more…]

Mini iPad Coming 2011? – Rumour

Digitimes have reported that Apple [AAPL] are working on a mini iPad and are planning to launch it in the first quarter of 2011.

They also go on to say that the mini iPad will have a 5 to 7 inch screen and be priced below $400 when launched.

Kuo, citing talks with upstream component sources, said Apple’s smaller-size iPad will be priced below US$400 and will target the highly-portable mobile device market and consumers that focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input.

Notion Ink Adam – Update

Notion Ink have spoken up about the Adam and what’s happening with their new Android OS based tablet computer. Although Notion Ink couldn’t comment on 3rd party issues that are effecting it’s launch date due to NDA’s, they have commented that getting flash working on the device to give satisfactory results is one of their prime goals right now. They said that they would rather have it working right, and once it does they will launch it after a couple of months of testing. Launch dates have not been specified, but what was mentioned was the hope to get it launched in time for the new school year.

The creator is a student himself, and therefore has been working with various companies to provide an all around good educational experience for the Adam tablet.

Also the Apple iPad was mentioned in that they wanted to see how that functioned and compare it to their own device as in “did they miss anything, or can they improve on anything”. Of course the iPad has a fantastically smooth UI which we hope we will see similar results on the Adam. [Read more…]

Skype for iPhone gets an update – Still no 3G Calling

The latest version of Skype for the Apple iPhone has been released. The new version is numbered 1.3.1 and unfortunately does not add 3G calling to the VoIP software.

Skype first announced that it would open up for 3G calling back in February, so it was expected with the 1.3.1 update that this would happen, unfortunately it didn’t.

The update that was launched today instead just fixed a number of bugs in the software that had been reported. [Read more…]

Microsoft could launch “Pink” Smartphone Series on April 12

Both Apple [AAPL] and Microsoft [MSFT] announced press events yesterday. The Apple event is to showcase their new iPhone OS 4 that looks to be launching later this year. The Microsoft event is a little more hush in that we are not sure as of yet what they will be launching.

The invites from Microsoft had a message on them saying “It’s time to share” which was included along side an invitation to a mystery event.

Rumours have indicated that the Microsoft Courier might be introduced at this event although it is believed that MS will be unveiling the new MS smartphone platform called “Pink” – well, that’s the code name at least. [Read more…]

HP Slate Promotional Video Launched

After a successful launch of the Apple iPad, it seems like Microsoft [MSFT] and other companies involved in the tablet race need to get moving in the right direction. A few months back the HP Slate was first revealed which showed potential, but news about the Slate has been quite thin on the ground.

We have just spotted a video launched by HP to show of their new HP Slate that gives a quick glimpse as to what we can expect from the device.

From what we see in the video it has a camera on the back and front as video and pictures are captured as well as a Skype Video call being made with the Slate. Cameras are something that the iPad lack. A USB port can be seen in the video allowing you to connect it up to a computer (the iPad does offer this through it’s 30 pin dock connector to USB as standard) but the Slate might get some additional functionality here. JooJoo Reviewed

Engadget managed to get hold of a JooJoo for review. They actually received it just before the Apple iPad launched, but due to various reasons they chose not to give a full review of the JooJoo till after Saturday. Well, the review is now live showing in depth what the JooJoo can do.

My own impressions of the device are that it does look good. It has a large screen with capacitive touch and looks sleek, however, after seeing Engadget with a hands on JooJoo review, I’m having second thoughts now and will be keeping away from the tablet for the time being.

Main problems that I spotted in the video are that it just doesn’t seem finished. The UI is laggy, video is laggy and often inputs are misinterpreted.

When rotating the JooJoo the browser flips around as can be expected on many devices these days, but for some reason the JooJoo doesn’t resize a website to suit the screen orientation making it too wide to browse in landscape and too thin to browse in portrait. [Read more…]

WordPress iPad App Launched

The WordPress App for the iPhone has been around for a while now. We hear today that WordPress for iPad has launched allowing wordpress bloggers to connect up to their blog from the iPad and edit/approve comments, create posts and create pages.

There isn’t much difference between the new iPad version vs the older iPhone version other than the iPad version makes a lot more use of the large screen allowing for easier editing of posts and content along with being able to see a column down the left side of the screen showing comments, posts and other interesting information.

When entering a post a large keyboard pops up allowing you to easily create the content you need. The ability to make links is also there. With the larger screen it actually looks like it will make the iPad version of WordPress usable. Right now for the Apple [AAPL] iPhone, the app is usable, but generally for approving comments and editing posts while out on the move. I personally wouldn’t use the iPhone version to create content for a site although the iPad version looks like it might be good enough to do just that. [Read more…]

iFixit investigate FCC iPad Internal Images

iFixit were quick off the mark and have analysed the FCC Apple iPad internal images in more depth than the average person it seems. The team have managed to extract the RAW files associated with the images which allowed them to essentially remove the blanks to reveal the real images behind including all the chip numbers associated with the chips.

The iPad model from Apple [AAPL] analysed by the FCC carries the internal name of #A1219. iFixit also point out that Apple had asked the FCC to keep this information covered up till August 17 this year. It’s not clear if the FCC didn’t realise the blanked out text could be fixed, or if they don’t really bow to Apple’s demands. Either way, all the info is there although in some cases a little hard to see due to low resolution shots. [Read more…]
