Apple iPhone runs Google Android

Here is something we don’t see everyday, an iPhone that has been hacked to run Google Android. The video (embedded below) shows Android running on the iPhone. Not everything is in place such as the Android functions on various menus. The iPhone has had a few keys remapped to allow easier navigation around the phone, such as the power button being the back button and the volume buttons also having their own functions other than volume.

It doesn’t run the greatest, but it is an early build which the developer says is closer to an Alpha release than a Beta release. It does show potential though and although scrolling isn’t the quickest in the browser, the screen transitions are actually quite impressive and appear to beat my own G1 in terms of load speed. Google Maps Navigation now works in UK

Google [GOOG] has updated Google Maps for Android smartphones that now allows Google Maps Navigation to work in the UK. Previously only the US had this functionality and those in the UK had to resort to rooting their Android phone and installing a hacked version.

The new version works just as it does in the US where you load up the application, select a destination and you now get an option to navigate in the menu system. After selecting the option you then get navigation ability in the UK.

The only Android smartphone I have here to test on is a T-Mobile G1 running 1.6 and I can confirm that it works on this device, so I assume that it will work on most smartphones running at least 1.6 or above. [Read more…]

UPDATE: We just head that the paper mis-quoted Williams… this is all not happening. Oh well!

We are hearing rumours that Nokia [NOK] are going to be porting Ovi Maps Navigation on to Android and Windows Phone devices in the near future. The information came as follows…

Greig Williams who is Nokia’s general manager for the Alps and South East Europe, told the Austrian newspaper Die Presse that porting Ovi Maps to Android and Windows Mobile “will be the next step.”

Reading between the lines a little here could reveal a couple of things. CoPilot Live 8 stores map data on the memory card of your phone meaning that you do not need to rely on a data connection for it to function. Google Maps Navigation out of US Gets Blocked

Google-Maps-NavigationWe wrote a few weeks back about how to get Google Maps Navigation to work for Android users outside of the US. Navigation worked great and was very functional. However, as can be expected, Google have externally closed the loophole preventing users from using the service outside of the US. When loading up navigation now you get simple message saying “No Route Found – Navigation to your Destination Not Possible”.

The thread on XDA Developers explains what is happening and what their teams are trying to do to get around it again. Ideas currently being worked on include looking in to using a proxy server to give the appearance to Google that you are in the US although I am sure it will be another cat and mouse game where users create a way around the restriction and Google in turn, close it off.
