Pedalite Pedals

Using your bike on a busy road at night can be lethal if you are not brightly lit up. Drivers just do not always notice a cyclist and that can be fatal. The Pedalite Pedals aim to increase your bike’s visibility by lighting up the edge of your pedals. A nice feature about the Pedalite pedals is that they use kinetic energy to light up the bright LED’s which can stay lit for up to 5 minutes after you stop pedalling. When you pedal away the energy created is sufficient to keep them lit meaning no batteries are needed, ever. Three of these LED’s are built in to the pedal with one at the back, one on the front and one on the outer side.

Blackboard Wall Clock

Look back a few years to your school days and you will remember the good old blackboard (or chalkboard as it should be called these days). This new wall clock is built with a blackboard face which you can chalk on to. There is a small holder along the bottom of the clock which will hold the chalk, but you will need to get your own eraser for it.

Analogue GPS made of Lego

The Lego contraption was built as an analogue GPS unit. It has a 1.6m roll inside which includes images. If it’s dark then LED lighting will switch on to give you a better picture and there is a plastic cover over the top so rain doesn’t damage the images. On the downside, it’s just a single route from someone’s home to school in case he gets lost. Still quite unique though and I must admit, quite creative.

Mobile Phone’s with Blu-Ray?

Just as you thought your phone had every feature crammed inside it’s little case, a company has to come along and say “hold on, there’s no Blu-Ray in that phone yet”. Vmedia have created an amazing 32mm diameter optical disc that can fit a full feature length movie on to it in 576p resolution. The tiny optical disc is to be found inside a small cartridge in a similar way to Sony’s Mini Disc (but smaller) and it uses blue laser technology. The capacity of the first single layer discs will be 1GB and this will be doubled to 2GB when the dual layer version becomes available which is expected to be in 2009.

Vmedia have made the whole system be available as a package to mobile phone manufacturers. The component is easy to integrate and is designed to be used in mobile phone, hence, it can be beaten up, dropped and should still function. Power for the device shouldn’t be a concern as it has been designed with low power consumption in mind. Later in 2008 a newer 2nd gen player will be launched which will be just 9.5mm thick.

Normally I would recommend waiting for such a device to mature and iron out all the kinks. However, in the UK we generally change our contracts every 12 months which mean if we buy the first gen as soon as they are available, then by the time the 2nd gen or 3rd gen dual layer are out, we could easily pick up a new phone with that technology in.

Although this is exciting news I am still wondering how they will compete with microSD cards which are increasing in capacity and are well over the 2Gb capacity at affordable prices. The good news is that the quality stored on the disc means it can also be inserted in to a player and put on to the big screen, but will it do well? I am not too sure. For some reason the whole idea sounds cool though of having Blu-ray discs on your phone.

Super Bowl-B-Gone

Bucky Reed probably wont be the most popular person when he unleashes his TV-B-Gone while watching super bowl at some public place. The TV-B-Gone is a device which switches off almost any TV at the push of a button. It works by using 4 infrared LED’s which transmit all the off codes for all TV’s. Anything you point it at will be switched off successfully unless the IR sensor is covered up. Bucky has custom built it and is trying to fit it in to his Nokia phone to keep most people unaware it was him who did it.

If you have a fear of crashing on your motor bike then this air bag jacket could fix that fear. It is called Hit Air jacket and attaches to your motorbike with a tether. If you happen to fly off your bike the jacket will inflate to protect your neck, chest, back, ribs and hips from getting any serious injury. It costs $410 and is available from a company named Hit-Air.

Apple Patent – Illuminated Touch Pad for Visual Feedback

A Patent for Apple was filed August last year and approved yesterday. The patent is for an Illuminated Touch Pad which appears that the light panel will be capable of emitting light in localized areas of the input surface. What this means is basically visual feed back which when you touch the scroll wheel on an iPod, the touch wheel will light up under your finger to visually show what just happened with the light actually following your finger around the dial. As well as the touch wheel being illuminated, the button in the middle will also light up too to show the actions on what it is doing.

Philips GoGear MP3 Player

GoGear is made by Philips. The latest MP3 player with this brand is the SA2845 which is due out the first quarter of this year. They have a relatively low price of $29 – $49 and the player is very compact and looks rather cool. It has an OLED display, USB 2.0 connectivity and an FM tuner built in. On the storage side there is sufficient too with it having 4GB built in which is enough for a good amount of albums to be stored.
