Rumour: Apple Snaps up All Available Supplies of 10.1 in LCD/OLED Screens

I was hoping that rumours were coming to an end today after the crazy Apple 4G rumour we posted this morning, but unluckily I came across another about the Apple iSlate again. This time an unknown source has told TG Daily that Apple have purchased all available supplies of 10.1 inch LCD and OLED multi-touch displays for an upcoming device.

“We were designing a product for a customer and we needed 10 inch screens, but we’ve been trying for months and can’t get one from any of the Asian suppliers,” an anonymous designer for a firm wishing to remain nameless told TG Daily.

Samsung 3D Paper Thin OLED Display

Samsung have a small 14 inch 3D screen on show at CES this year that measures just 1.6mm thin. It’s odd to think a TV this thin can actually be built. As with all ultra thin TV’s that we have seen recently, this Samsung prototype also features a pedestal stand where the bulk of the electronics are stored to keep as much away from the back of the panel as needed.

The screen it’s self is capable of showing 3D images. Unfortunately it’s about 3 years away from being mass produced due to the costs involved in having anything big enough to fit in the living room at a decent price, but as all technology continues to drop in price we’ll sometime in the next few years see screens this thin in stores at today’s thicker TV prices. Samsung Laptop has Transparent OLED Screen

At CES, Samsung unveiled a laptop that has a transparent OLED screen that can let up to 40% light through it from the background. Although it might not be fully practical in a laptop design a transparent OLED screen has applications elsewhere such as being embedded on to the wind-shield of your car allowing navigation to be overlayed on to the road ahead.

The current maximum transparency on other screens is only 25%, so bumping that up to 40% by Samsung is a good achievement. [Read more…]

HP Slate Revealed at CES

At the Microsoft [MSFT] keynote at CES, Steve Ballmer showed off the new HP Slate that will be launching later this year. Not much information was provided about it although it was seen running the PC Kindle app. The HP Slate is Windows based (I assume Windows 7) and features multitouch.

Gaming can be done on the Slate but the only game shown on the demo was Frogger which isn’t really an intensive app.

The front of the devices houses the screen that looks to be somewhere between the 9 and 11 inch range along with a border around it. There are no buttons on the front of the HP Slate. Around the sides there are a few buttons which I assume are to wake it up, switch wireless on as well as changing the volume, but as this is currently a prototype this could potentially change. Samsung LED 9000 Ultra-Thin TV Unveiled

Samsung have unveiled a number of TV’s over at CES 2010. The top of the range TV to be revealed is the Samsung LED 9000 series ultra-thin screen that achieves it’s thinness by cramming a lot of the innards in to the pedestal it sits on.

The screen it’s self looks great and runs at 240Hz to allow for smoother video to be run. A unique remote control was also launched that is capable of showing content on it’s screen from other video sources making it very unique.

The TV follows on with the 2010 theme of 3D and will be capable of transforming regular 2D content in to 3D (somehow) as well as being able to play 3D content that’s due out later this year. [Read more…]

ioSafe Solo SSD Revealed

If you look back a few months you might remember the fireproof and waterproof harddrive we reviewed from ioSafe that was capable of withstanding temperatures of 1550F for 30 minutes as well as being dunked in 10 feet of water for 3 days. If your house caught fire and you wanted safe data then an ioSafe is a fantastic option.

ioSafe have now introduced a new version of the drive that runs an SSD drive rather than a harddrive inside. It is called the ioSafe Solo SSD. ioSafe say that the external water and fireproof SSD is the first of it’s kind. The drive comes in capacities of up to 256GB and connects to a computer via an eSATA/USB interface.

The material used to keep things safe on the drive is called ArmorPlate that is a military grade steel casing. By using the grade of steel it does the drive receives protection from shock and protects it from being crushed. [Read more…]

Lenovo have announced details of the Skylight smartbook that is very thin and light. The Skylight is a 10 inch screen device that has a decent battery life of 10 hours allowing for all day usage between charges.

The smartbook weighs under two pounds and runs a version of Linux from what we can tell that uses a system of widgets on the home screen that are updated real time from the web. Connectivity for the Skylight is provided by a built in 3G connection and wifi is also available to use.

One of the unique features of the Lenovo Skylight is an integrated USB memory stick that sits between the keyboard and the screen. This can be removed if required by simply rotating it out of the smartbook and disconnecting it. [Read more…]

Buffalo HD-AVU2 External HDD Revealed

Buffalo have revealed their latest external harddrive called the HD-AVU2. The drive connects to a computer via USB 2.0 and is available in four capacities of 500GB, 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB.

There isn’t a wow factor about this external hard drive and the only thing that would make it stand out on a shop shelf if how it looks – important to some but with things like this, sometimes the specification really does become more important. [Read more…]

Death Star Blue Prints Revealed

Ever wanted to build your own Death Star or perhaps a Light Sabre or Darth Vader mask? This book is for you. The Star Wars Blue Prints book provides all the details you need on how to build all of the above items. Of course you’ll need quite a large factory (about the size of a small moon) if you want to build a full operational Death Star as well as means to get it up in to space, but forgetting the small obstacles you’ll have all you need to get going.

It actually looks like quite an interesting book for times when there isn’t much going on and well worth paying the $14 or so dollars for someone’s Christmas present (although if you are still shopping now then you’ll have to pay for next day shipping to get it on time). [Read more…]
