Windows Phone 7 Series – Why the Series?

by Matthew Newill on February 16, 2010

When Microsoft [MSFT] announced the official name for their new operating system as Windows Phone 7 Series, it raised a few questions from around the world which wondered why "Series" was added to the end.

Some speculated that Series could refer to different versions of the operating system like we get on a home or work computer such as Windows Phone 7 Series - Home Edition, Premium, Small Business Edition... you get the idea.

Microsoft has responded to a question asked by the guys over at Gear Log...

Rena Lunak, .... said, absolutely not. "Series" just means that Windows Phone 7 will be continuously updated, and that phones will be able to receive updates - just like Google Android phones or Apple iPhones.

I for one like the idea that there is one version of the OS for all rather than it being broken down in to different options for different users. I hate that I run a certain version of Windows 7 on my laptop, and could be missing out on software (even though I might never use it).
