Western Digital have released a new set of external harddrives that include e-ink displays on the front to inform you of how much storage space you have available and how much you have used.
The great thing about e-ink is that it requires no power to stay in-state which means that when you switch the drive off, the e-ink label will still tell you how much drive space is available. E-Ink only requires a very small amount of power when changing state, so it makes an ideal display for an external hard drive.
The e-ink features are included on the My Book Elite and My Book Studio USB 2.0 drives that cost $280, both come with 2TB of storage and cost $280 and $300 respectively. The reason the Studio costs more is more than likely to be because it also has a firewire port to allow connectivity that route if you prefer not to use USB.
To allow you to use the Western Digital drives for backing up your data, WD have provided the SmartWare backup software that allows you to create automatic password protected and encrypted backups of your data.
