Web Server in your Pocket

The versatile Android mobile phone platform is set to get a funky application in the form of web server software. i-Jetty technology allows mobile phone users to create AJAX and comet-enabled websites on an Android mobile phone. With this software running, it will be possible to access your mobile phone from any desktop or laptop PC connected to the internet.

The web server software is light weight at the moment although it can serve dynamic content if sat behind a dedicated HTTP server. The software runs as a servlet on Android and once running, the phone can be accessed from anywhere. Early usage of the i-Jetty software will be for features such as accessing your calendar, phone book and making calls via your mobile phone from your PC. However, I can imagine this to be something quite a bit bigger as it will open up new possibilities. Software like this could easily enable your mobile phone to be a portable pocket sized weblog capturing all the events of your day and publishing them from your phone to the world.

Right now the software is powerful enough to handle a few users and in time, as hardware specs increase and the code is optimised, it will be able to handle more. If a busy website is needed to run from the phone then it’s probably best to syndicate the content to a web server in a data centre so all the traffic can be better handled.

i-Jetty is currently a free download over at Google Code.
