VGA to USB Power Adapter

usb vga power VGA to USB Power AdapterIf you are looking to hook up an external drive to your laptop that requires an extra boost of power, but all your USB ports are fully loaded then you could use this little hack to get some extra power from the VGA port on your laptop.

The port created is not a fully fledged USB port as it only provides power to what ever is plugged in to it. It works by “borrowing” electricity that is present on the VGA port by default. To make one of these yourself you will need a male to male VGA gender changer and a female USB plug that you can snip off the end of an old USB extension cable. By connecting the RED 5V wire to PIN 9 on the gender changer you will get some power through it. It needs to be grounded to PIN 10 (black cable) to complete the circuit. EverythingUSB recommend some epoxy to stick it all together and prevent wires jumping out.

But… I do recommend not trying this as it could break your VGA port on your laptop if done incorrectly. I also have not verified if the PIN requirements are correct, so please check on those first. I can’t really see that many people needing to make this modification though as it is rather weird to be honest.
