Pico projectors are fairly new to the market with only 1, maybe 2 available to purchase. They use bright LED’s as their source of light and tend to be able to throw a screen on to a surface of about 50 inches.
Toshiba were showing off their version of a Pico projector at CES this year which measures 1.8 x 0.7 x 3.9 inches and weighs just 100 grams. The LED lamp inside that provides light for the images lasts around 2000 hours. Hopefully with it being LED based the lamps will be easy and cheap enough to remove and install when broken, or when something brighter is launched.
