Swype is the new T9

by Matthew on September 10, 2008

swype Swype is the new T9For those familiar with sending text messages from a standard mobile phone you will probably have used the T9 dictionary sometimes known as predictive text. What T9 did was allow you to tap each number just once and as you spelled your word out it would then eventually get to the correct word. This helped speed up the process of text messaging as it required just 1 click per key rather then tapping the number 3 key three times to get an F. Cliff Kushler who was on the team that invented T9 has now created another really cool idea which is named Swype.

What Swype does is allow you to type quickly on your touch screen mobile phone. Rather then tapping the screen with your thumbs you simply swipe your finger over the characters of the word you want to spell. Take the example above which spells the word quick. You simply put your finger on Q and drag all the way over the U to the I, back to the C and on to the K where you finish. The system can then look at the pattern and work out what word you were trying to spell (I guess by looking at the turning points of your text at the Q, I, C, K points… the obvious character to enter in there is U which the system works out automatically.

Registration can be done over on the Swype website linked below so you can be informed when the software will be available for download.

This is pretty cool, I have been looking for something on my OQO and this might be it.

this technology is already available in an application on the iPhone – it’s called WritingPad .. and it works pretty decently. have tried playing around with the app and get, in my opinion 70 – 80 % accuracy. it’s definitely a technology too look out for.

actually let me correct the accuracy…it works about 85 – 95% accurately for known words.

I think it’s nice. But you should check out SlideIT, it’s quite simillar and downloadable.

How would I type the word QUIP?

But T9 sucks.. I always used the regular telephone letters because they type exactly what I want, and don’t try to type anything for me.
