The image you see above is of a radio mast. This particular mast was responsible for creating the laser blast noises in Star Wars. By hitting the metal wires with a wrench, it created almost the exact sound you hear from the blasters.
The video below goes through a number of techniques used to create sounds for the Star Wars universe and is well worth watching if you’re in to that sort of thing.
As well as showing a demo of how all the sounds were created, the video is also promoting a book that covers many of the sounds found in Star Wars.
