We mentioned last week that Skype for iPhone was about to (possibly) be launched. Well, Skype for iPhone is now available for download.
Gizmodo downloaded the app and found that iPhone to computer calls worked just fine while iPhone to iPhone skype calls were lacking a bit on one of the phones. Maybe that was a one off problem though. As of now, there is no background notification so any calls received by Skype will require that you have the application loaded to take calls.
Some other interesting news that was found out is that when using iPhone firmware 2.2.1 you cannot make VoIP calls over 3G and are prompted to switch on Wi-Fi. However, if you are a beta user of iPhone OS 3.0 then 3G is not locked down and you can make calls over a 3G network. No doubt a loop that will be closed down asap by AT&T. Hopefully though, they will follow the way that 3 and the Skypephone went in the UK and allow a crazy amount of free minutes of Skype and SkypeOut calls over their 3G network. Chat sessions do work over 3G though on either OS which is good.

I have just downloaded this for my 2nd gen ipod touch and am loving it. It’s very nice looking, and works great. I haven’t called with it yet, as don’t have a mic, but have tried chat and that works really well.
and its free of course, wahoo
