$8.5bn Purchase of Skype Completed

Microsoft [MSFT] has announced that it completed the $8.5bn purchase of Skype.

New iOS Skype Update Brings New Features and Ads

A new Skype update has been released for iOS devices that brings a number of new features. On the plus side, yes there is a negative for some users, Skype has allowed Bluetooth Headset support as well as video stabilisation for calls. Skype has launched a new app for iOS devices called Skype WiFi. The app lets you use Skype Credit to pay for WiFi access, by the minute, at a number of hotspots around the globe. The idea behind it is that you have a single service to log in to and then have an easy way to pay for what you use rather than paying for a full day usage at a time which is common in a number of places.

Skype To Bring Video Calling to Windows Phone 7

By the end of 2011 you will more than likely be able to use Skype on your Windows Phone 7 smartphone to make video calls. This assumes you have a front facing camera of course.

Microsoft is currently hiring someone “…for building and optimizing the Skype Video Engine solution for Microsoft Windows and Windows Phone platforms.”. This strongly indicates that Skype video calling will be coming soon to WP7 smartphones.

Skype for iPad Launched

Earlier this morning Skype launched a native app for the iPad. Unfortunately it was pulled out of the app store moments later and then followed by a tweet saying:

To ensure your best Skype experience, we’ve temporarily removed Skype for iPad which went live prematurely today.

Good new though as a quick check of the app store shows that it is available again (at least here in the UK where I am testing it now).

Skype Updated to Version 5.5 on Windows

A new version of Skype has been launched on Windows. The latest update is version 5.5 which brings a few new features to the VoIP service. New features of Skype 5.5 include a deeper Facebook integration that allows you to speak with Facebook contacts as well as see wall posts and make comments all from the Skype interface.
