No UMD’s For PSP2 Either??

by Martyn on November 1, 2010

To add even more bumpf to the rumour mill, it seems that (allegedly) Sony's PSP2 will not be launched housing a UMD drive.

Is it just me or were one of the main reasons why the PSPGo didn't do as well as intended was due to the removal of it's UMD drive and reverting to digital downloads only instead?? [click to continue…]

Price cut heading for PSPgo

by Martyn on October 13, 2010

Even before release day, the PSPgo suffered from bad publicity mainly due the early announcement of allowing the gamer to only being able to download content with Sony doing away with the UMD drive altogether.

Then there was the pricing of the unit... At $250 brand-spanking new, the PSPgo wasn't going to do itself any favours. [click to continue…]

You may not remember, but way back when computers weren't too well equipped enough to power any kind of graphics to speak of, one craze that quickly grew amongst the more 'geeky' or 'nerdy' groups was the 'text-based adventure' first realised during the mid 1970's. [click to continue…]

Back in August there was a big suggestion that a Sony PSP phone running Android 3.0 could be launched. The rumours also claimed that we could see the PSP Phone within three months of August.

We now hear from Sony that this is not happening. Questioned by Seattle Times, SCEA SVP Peter Dille said about the PSP Phone...

"No new mobile launches this year," he said in response. "Our strategy is to maintain the PlayStation brand on Sony devices and provide experiences that are exclusive and proprietary."

Rumours are circulating about the next generation Sony PSP. The rumours say that the next version will be the same size as the PSP-3000 model and that it will have touch-sensitive controls on the back of the unit.

Rather than using traditional controls, it is expected that the touch panel located on the back will allow you to control the games.

The screen on the PSP 2 is said to be both rich and detailed although it isn't clear if the screen will be larger with the controls moving to the back, or if the addition of both controls (ie, physical and touch sensitive) will be all included. [click to continue…]

It appears that the latest Sony PSP advert is taking a dig at Apple [AAPL] iPhone users. The advert features a kid who says you can get decent games for the PSP for just $9.99 (older games) that are far better than what's available on the mobile phones. The ad doesn't specifically mention Apple although the phone one of the guys holds up clearly looks like an iPhone.

It isn't clear why Sony are targeting mobile phones for gaming considering that recently it was revealed that Sony Ericsson could be making a PSP Go Android smartphone specifically aimed at gamers. Perhaps those rumours wont happen though. [click to continue…]

Engadget is reporting today that Sony Ericsson could be building a PSP Go style device that will run Android 3.0 and work as a smartphone.

The information comes from a trusted source and indicates that Sony Ericsson is working on a way to redefine gaming using the Android 3.0 platform.

Sony Ericsson "...is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google's mobile platform. We now know (via a trusted source) that the company is actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning. And we've got the goods on it." [click to continue…]

We are hearing from I4U today that the next generation Sony PSP 2 could get a 3G connection built in. One step that some people are thinking of is the PSP's leap in to 3D like the Nintendo 3DS although this is unlikely to happen when the nextgen PSP 2 launches.

By building a 3G connection in to the PSP 2 it essentially allows games to be on-line wherever they are to download new games and other content as well as play on-line gaming with others without the need of a wireless hotspot.

As well as providing content and "possible" on-line gaming to the PSP 2, the 3G connection would also let users surf the internet wherever they can pick up a 3G signal. [click to continue…]

The people at Sony are working on a new Playstation concept according to the Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida.

It isn't clear at the moment if the new concepts being created are for a new Sony PSP 2 or perhaps even a PS4 although the PSP 2 is the more likely off the two considering the PS3 has a number of years of life left in it yet.

Sony has filed a trademark called Playview that reveal a few features that could be included in the new update...

''Portable electronic device for receiving and reading text and images and sound through wireless Internet access and for displaying electronically published materials, namely, books, journals, newspapers, magazines, multimedia presentations. with an added 'Computer game software recorded on optical discs.
