Transparent OLED Displays by LG and Samsung

by Matthew on October 28, 2009

lg display 15 inch transparent oled 1 300x242 Transparent OLED Displays by LG and SamsungLG and Samsung have been showing off some cool transparent OLED displays. The LG screen measures 15 inches and could work in notebooks. Samsungs screen measures just 2 inches and could potentially be used in mobile phones.

It is unclear why transparent screens are needed unless perhaps used for shining light through to project on to a larger screen, but even if they have no purpose they still look rather good.

Instead of using the back section of the screen that prevents transparency, this has instead been removed. Each has a transparency of 30%. For the LG screen it is unknown what the resolution is, but the smaller Samsung screen can show 176 x 220 pixels. [click to continue…]

LG BL40 Chocolate Review

by Matthew on October 19, 2009

LG BL40 Chocolate Review 300x200 LG BL40 Chocolate ReviewThe LG BL40 Chocolate mobile phone is unique due to it’s cinematic widescreen display that has an aspect ratio of 21:9 allowing it to play feature length movies with no borders top or bottom. With the BL40 having a large aspect ratio screen the phone is longer than your average mobile phone and though pictures seem to show the phone being a little over sized, when holding it you’ll find that it actually works very well and sits in your pocket very well.

The front of the phone is covered in tempered glass and has a nice glossy shine to it. There are no buttons on the front of the device and it’s just a smooth piece of glass that has just the ear speaker cut out. Both the top and bottom ends of the phone are accented in a vibrant red while the sides continue on the glossy black look of the front along with a thin silver strip that runs the length of the phone on each side. On the back of the phone the black gloss look is continued with just a small cut out for the 5 megapixel camera lens, flash and a small microphone. [click to continue…]

LG Crystal GD900 Used as a Portable Fish Tank

by Matthew on October 17, 2009

fish in lg crystal 300x221 LG Crystal GD900 Used as a Portable Fish TankThe LG Crystal is known for it’s unique crystal keypad that slides out from behind the device, but did you know it can hold water (un-officially) as well as a couple of little fish? This is what one guy did by creating possibly the worlds first portable mobile phone fish tank.

The owner of the phone took the back off and then put a couple of small fish in the back (I have no idea what sort of fish) and when the back was on he injected some of the fish tank water.

As can be seen in the picture above, the phone actually still works as does the back light on the transparent keypad. Take a look at the video after the jump to witness the madness. [click to continue…]

LG GW520 Review

by Matthew on October 15, 2009

LG GW520 keyboard 300x200 LG GW520 ReviewWe recently received the LG GW520 phone for review. The GW520 has a 2.8 inch touchscreen along with a full QWERTY slide out keyboard making it ideal for social networking and messaging. A number of modern phones have virtual keyboards that work well, but for some people they just cannot get to grips with on on-screen keyboard and hence, prefer the physical keyboard instead.

Priced at £169.95 for a pay-as-you-go version the GW520 is at a good price for what you get. It’s not the cheapest of phones but at the same time, it’s not the most expensive, and sits in an affordable bracket.

The phone it’s self feels a little plastic in comparison to LG’s high end phones such as the LG BL40. Also the phone is slightly fatter than other LG phones due to the physical keyboard, however this doesn’t make it an oversized phone and it does sit quite well in your hands. [click to continue…]

It was created by a company called ITRI that are based in Taiwan and from the technical specs it shows that the speaker has a frequency range of 500Hz to 20KHz giving it a fair bit of the hearing range.

The speaker it’s self is very thin and can be mounted on a wall for example. ITRI are also looking in to the possibility of linking a number of these together to create a larger wall of sound so to speak. [click to continue…]
