Amazon has reported that sales of the Amazon Kindle range of devices has tripled over the holiday season. Although Amazon do not report on specifics such as the amount of devices sold, they do comment that sales went extremely well.
“We are grateful to the millions of customers who purchased the Kindle Fire and Kindle e-reader devices this holiday season, making Kindle our bestselling product across both the U.S. and Europe,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “Our millions of third-party sellers had a tremendous holiday season with 65% unit growth and now represent 36% of total units sold.”

The Amazon Kindle Touch had a problem when it was launched. The problem was that it is just a little slower than wanted. Amazon has finally responded by making a new update available which fixes the problem. The update is 5.0.3 and it is available now.

The Amazon Kindle Fire is getting close to a fully working version of Ice Cream Sandwich. Although Amazon doesn't officially run Ice Cream Sandwich on the Kindle Fire, developers over at XDA are still working on an unofficial port.

The advertising network Chitika has compiled some results in to a graph. The graph gives a comparison on how the competition is doing when compared to the Apple iPad.
The data was collected from US and Canadian users of tablets and is based on hundreds of millions of display ads seen on each of those devices. Due to the market share of the iPad the competition looked quite flat. To help visualise the data more easily, Chitika set the bar at 100 iPad impressions and then plotted what the competition was seeing.

Amazon has released a new update for the Kindle Fire that brings it up to version 6.2.2. The new version brings a new feature to the tablet but we should also warn here that it also breaks root for those who have rooted their new tablet.

A rumour started today indicates that Google [GOOG] is working on creating a 7 inch tablet... perhaps a Nexus Tablet to be more precise. Although this is a rumour, it probably isn't far from the truth. The problem with Android tablets is that none of them have really taken off. We haven't included the Kindle Fire when making that statement, but it is an Android tablet but completely customised to feel different. This of course could mean that Amazon is winning the Android race. Either way, Google is lagging behind and needs to do something about it.

Hackers have managed to extract the Silk browser from the Amazon Kindle Fire and port it over to various rooted Android devices. The Silk browser is Amazons attempt to speed up web browsing. It works by calculating some elements of a webpage server side which speeds up processing time. It also attempts to predict what links you will click on so that your next page will be already calculated and ready to download when you want to go to it.

Estimates indicate that Apple [AAPL] sold 2 million fewer iPads this past holiday season. It is estimated that almost 16 million units were to be shipped but figures hint at about 13 million were shipped. A lot of that shortfall is believed to caused by the Amazon Kindle Fire.

The Amazon Kindle Fire was a relatively easy device to root. All that was required was the SuperOneClick utility that rooted the device which in turn, allowed the Kindle Fire to have custom firmware such as CyanogenMod installed on it. Each time an update arrived it unrooted the device, but after running SuperOneClick it was rooted again. This has changed though. Amazon has just released the 6.2.1 firmware update for the Fire which interestingly blocks the SuperOneClick software from working.

Apple could be planning to launch a smaller iPad in time for Christmas 2012. This new iPad would follow along from the iPad 3 that is expected in April. The difference will be the screensize of 7.85 inches as opposed to the regular 9.7 inch iPad screen we see on the yearly generation changes.

A number of users are reporting problems with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Reports indicate that the new tablet has problems with browsing speeds as well as other general performance issues. As the Kindle Fire has adequate technical specs, a software update will fix the problems. Good news is that this particular update will be arriving within a couple of weeks.
