Apple iPad Announced

by Matthew Newill on January 27, 2010

After many months of rumours, Apple [AAPL] have officially announced the Apple iPad. iPad will be the official name and not Apple Tablet, Apple iSlate or whatever else we were expecting.

The iPad has been described as being very thin and promises the best web browsing experience to date of any mobile device. It has been described as being way better than a phone and way better than a laptop. The screen is capable of showing a full web page at a time which can easily be zoomed in to. [click to continue…]

It appears that the iPhone Dev site from Apple [AAPL] had a strange blip yesterday just after it went off line for an update.

The image below shows a placeholder on the iPhone Dev site signup form which says "Need to update this for the 27th launch.". Could this mean that a new iPhone OS will be announced later on today? We have heard it once before when a supposed screen grab of iPhone OS for was found so there are already rumours going around about it. [click to continue…]

Leaked images of what is thought to be the Apple Tablet have been sent in to Engadget late last night that show the device running some kind of mapping application as well as the tablet being compared to an iPhone.

Of course the pictures cannot be verified until we know what the device will look like "if" it is unveiled today. From what we see in the pictures the Tablet device looks to either be in some sort of funky case, or perhaps bolted to a desk to prevent staff stealing/borrowing it.

When compared with the Apple [AAPL] iPhone it appears that the tablet will have either a 9 or 10 inch screen. The back of the device is said to be aluminium and as for pricing it is expected to be $800 on contract or $1000 off contract and being made available in March. [click to continue…]

TechCrunch mentioned that Steve Jobs was overheard saying "This will be the most important thing I've ever done while referring to the Apple iStale or iTablet.

If he is as happy as he can be over this product it makes you think we are going to be seeing something other than a bog standard device that we commonly see. Hopefully something unique like the iPhone but that will do a lot more. [click to continue…]

HotHardware are reporting that AT&T are to loose exclusivity of the Apple [AAPL] iPhone this Wednesday. No reports of other networks have been mentioned yet who are going to be taking the iPhone on-board, but this Wednesday also happens to coincide with a potential major Apple announcement which is believed to be the iSlate unveiling as well as iPhone OS 4.0 and now, perhaps the iPhone going on to other networks in the US.

Hothardware go on to mention that this could be a good thing for AT&T as the iPhone seems to be hurting their network. By giving options to customers on various networks will hopefully share the usage around and potentially lower the data used on each of the networks. [click to continue…]

No solid evidence has been found yet about the new tablet device from Apple [AAPL] that "might" be unveiled this Wednesday. However, a company called Flurry who analyse mobile applications say that they have detected around 50 devices that are connecting up from the Cupertino campus and appear to be tablets.

The devices that have been connecting up are running a new OS numbered 3.2. Some of the apps downloaded use Flurry's tracking code and when downloaded the numbers are reported back to Flurry along with details of the connected devices. It is currently believed that iPhone OS 4.0 could be also launched on Wednesday, so if these devices are tablets and are connecting up with 3.2 then it could mean that they are using a slightly modified version of 3.0 to test the iSlate / Tablet on and maybe we'll still see version 4.0 at launch. There's more reports/rumours going around about Apple [AAPL] and their iSlate or Tablet device saying that both AT&T and Verizon could be making it available on their networks. Up till now there hasn't been much, if any, solid evidence that the device will exist but bits of information have been pieced together making it quite likely that the device will be unveiled next week at an Apple event where a big announcement will be made.

It is believed that a "world version" will be made making it compatible on CDMA and GSM standard networks which should be announced Wednesday. However, other rumours are saying a couple of versions will be made making each compatible with a particular network. Either way, I am sure it will be cleared up on the 27th. [click to continue…]

WSJ have created a list of what can be expected in the Apple iSlate or iTablet or whatever it will be called. The tablet will come with the ability to be shared with several members of a household and could possibly use facial recognition to adjust settings according to individual needs. If it is cloud based then each user will get their own files when logging in.

Other information reveals that an on-screen keyboard will be used for text entry. That particular point is an obvious one really with any sort of tablet device. The tablet will focus on content for old media such as text books, news and TV putting them all in your hand while on the move. [click to continue…]

Details of the new iPhone 4.0 OS were leaked to BGR recently with a few details of what we could be seeing as soon as next week. New features could include multi-touch gestures OS-wide which adds to the rumour of the iTablet or iSlate using the same OS when launched.

Multitasking has also been mentioned in the leaked information that allows applications to be run in the background with a "few new ways". Changes to the UI on the graphics side have also been mentioned that are supposedly going to make using the device a lot easier and more efficient. [click to continue…]

MacObserver received some pictures of part of the iSlate recently which shows the device front casing. The clear glass section in the middle of the frame is capable of holding a 10 inch screen according to the source who sent the photos in.

Over the last few days three photos of the same front surface have been with a couple of them shown against a keyboard to give the sense of scale that the device will be.

The glass does look like an iPhone which the iSlate has been touted to be a larger version. However, it's unclear if the iSlate will literally be a 10 inch iPhone. [click to continue…]

A number of rumours about the next gen iPhone have been floating around over the last few months. Similar to the Apple iSlate roundup picture we posted last week, the iPhone 4G rumours roundup covers all rumours and their potential of actually happening measured in percent.

The image shows the back and front of the phone. On the back the rumours include a glowing Apple logo which is marked as low as possible at just 1% chance of happening. Other features on the back include an LED flash, 5 megapixel camera, touch sensitive case, full metal unibody case and a removable battery. [click to continue…]

Apple introduced a couple of iMac's last year that had screens measuring 21.5 inches and 27 inches. Digitimes are now reporting that Apple [AAPL] are to introduce a 22 inch model that will function as an "all-in-one" type device complete with a multi-touch screen.

I doubt the iMac all in one is going to be announced at the Apple event next week, but perhaps we will see the new iMac launched later on this year.

Production of the 22 inch iMac will go to Quanta and Sintek Photronic are apparently supplying the touchscreens for the unit. [click to continue…]
