by Matthew on March 10, 2010

quirky cloak ipad case 300x180 Quirky Cloak Apple iPad CaseAs the Apple iPad launch date draws nearer, more and more accessories are becoming available. The last one we mentioned just a few days ago was the Vers Wood iPad case. Next on the list is a case built by Quirky that is called the Quirky Cloak.

The Quirky Cloak is designed to look sleek and provide enough protection to keep your iPad safe within. It is built from non-slip rubber and has a durable plastic hinge on the edges.

The iPad slides in the top of the casing and once inside is held firmly by a friction grip. The Quirky Cloak is designed in a way that allows the iPad to sit on a surface in landscape mode, or stand up with a kick stand in portrait mode. [click to continue…]

Apple iPad 300x302 Some Apple iPhone Apps removed from iPad by Steve Jobs RumourIt seems like the iPad is going to be shipped with a few missing apps that were originally on the iPhone.

The information comes from John Gruber of DaringFireball who is usually bang on with the information he posts on his site. From what we know and believe, the Apple iPad will ship with 12 built-in apps that include the likes of a Calendar, web browser etc… Those missing include Stocks, Calculator, Clock, Weather and Voice Memos… so where are they?

The basic answer (or rumour) is that Steve Jobs decided to scrap them as they didn’t function like he wanted them to on a larger screen. You may notice that calendar had a full revamp for the iPad making use of the larger screen allowing for appointments to actually be seen in monthly view. It doesn’t seem to be the same for the apps that are missing in that they don’t essentially “look the part”. [click to continue…]

apple ipad video 300x174 Apple iPad Delay because of Software Issues? Now that the official shipping date is set for the Apple iPad in the US with rough dates set for end of April in the UK amongst other countries, we are now hearing of reasons why Apple [AAPL] delayed the launch.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball claims to have heard the software is the problem with the device rather than a hardware issue (or lack of certain parts). Apple, as do all companies, need to get the software just right to make a successful launch. If software is the reason (and we’ll probably never know for sure) then the extra time will hopefully allow them to get the final version on the iPad. Worst case scenario (other than a bunch of bricked devices) is that a large scale patch launch will need to happen to correct the software issues afterwards. [click to continue…]

ASUS Eee Pad – iPad Killer?

by Matthew on March 5, 2010

Asus Eee PC T91 Reference Image 300x225 ASUS Eee Pad iPad Killer? When Apple created the iPhone it seemed to be the benchmark for what other phones should at least be like. Each time a new smartphone was launched people asked if it would be an “iPhone Killer”.

Of course with the launch of the Apple iPad in a few weeks it seems companies are now wanting to create “iPad Killers”. ASUS are said to be pretty confident with their ASUS Eee Pad creation and believe that the iPad from Apple [AAPL] offers nothing that the Eee Pad cannot achieve. Eric Chen, the VP of ASUS Systems Business Group has said that the iPad is nothing but a big iPhone and due to that, the iPad won’t be able to command the same market share that the iPhone has achieved. Apple iPad Penguin Books Preview

by Matthew on March 4, 2010

Penguin iPad Books Apps 300x218 Apple iPad Penguin Books PreviewPenguin Books have given a demonstration of what their Apple iPad app will function like when launched.

“We will be embedding audio, video and streaming in to everything we do. The .epub format, which is the standard for ebooks at the present, is designed to support traditional narrative text, but not this cool stuff that we’re now talking about.”

It’s interesting to see how publishers are working with the iPad. Rather than creating boring ebooks that you read from cover to cover, they are making completely interactive books allowing children and adults to delve right in to the book. One example shown on video displays a page with the innards of a human body on. When clicking the heart the iPad zooms in and opens up the heard. When tapped again a 3D animated heart is displayed rotating on the screen. [click to continue…]

apple ipad mail 300x174 Apple iPad to get WSJ Murdoch ConfirmsConfirmation of the WSJ heading to the Apple iPad has been given by Rupert Murdoch. An Apple iPhone application is already available and with the scaling that the iPad can do, that particular application should be able to run full screen. However, an iPad version is also being worked on so that the company can utilise the full resolution of the large screen. The app is currently under development.

The developers have managed to get hold of an Apple [AAPL] iPad although funnily enough it is locked down at night by lock and key, and to make things even crazier, the key is turned by an employee of Apple to make sure nobody sneaks the device home with them. [click to continue…]

iPad Emergency Calls 300x382 Apple iPad has Ability to make Emergency Calls MaybeSince the SDK launched allowing developers to see what’s available in the Apple iPad a number of functions have been found. The latest finding indicates that emergency calls can be made from the device… how? we are not sure just yet.

The emergency call function was spotted when trying the passcode lock and entering the password incorrectly 5 times. On the fifth attempt it gives the option to make an emergency call.

The first thoughts I had which are in-line with many others is that it’s a simple mistake/bug that the Apple [AAPL] developers have left when modifying the iPhone OS. [click to continue…]

att apple ipad 300x300 AT&T CEO Apple iPad to be Wi Fi DrivenThe Chief Executive of AT&T has said that those who buy the Apple iPad will probably not use a subscription service from AT&T due to not wanting to be tied in to any sort of monthly payment and that the iPad will be a Wi-Fi driven product. It isn’t clear if the CEO means that only the Wi-Fi model will be the popular one, or if iPad users will potentially buy a 3G model but not keep their subscriptions active (which are arranged on a month to month basis).

“My expectation is that there’s not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription,” he said during a webcast of an investor conference, adding that the device would be a mainly “Wi-Fi driven product.”
