Samsung saw great success with the original Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. With that success, they went on to build a tablet or 2. Now, we have the Samsung Galaxy S2 which is a new and updated version of the original Galaxy S.

When taking the Galaxy S2 out of the box you immediately notice you are looking at a very nice smartphone. The device is sleek. It's slim and not heavy at all. Most of the front is taken up with the large 4.3 inch screen. Other than that, there's a small speaker, camera and a couple of sensors. Below the screen a button can be found which has a touch sensitive button on either side of it.

Sprint will be launching the HTC EVO 3D as well as the EVO View 4G on June 24 in the US.

The HTC EVO 3D is a smartphone that has a 4.3 inch qHD 3D display and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. When the EVO 3D launches, it will have a price tag of $199.99.

Google has launched a new version of Google Earth for Android. The new and updated version has been designed to take advantage of the new processors found in Android 3.0 tablets. As well as using the new processors more efficiently, Google has also optimised the software to be more compatible with the larger screen devices.

The Dell Streak 7 WiFi Only version is now available for pre-order over at Amazon. Currently, they have it listed at $379.99 although no specific release date has been provided. Due to Amazon already listing it, they could be preparing for a launch within the next 4 - 6 weeks.

The new 7 inch tablet is an Android 2.2 Froyo tablet that has a 7 inch screen that has capacitive touch, and is also multi-touch. Due to it running Android 2.2, it is also capable of running Adobe Flash 10.1. [click to continue…]

Last week we saw details of the Sony S1 Playstation certified tablet. That particular tablet is will run Android Honeycomb and also will play Playstation games. It has a 9.4 inch screen.

We now hear that Sony also plan to launch a clamshell version similar to the S1. This second device is called the Sony S2 and is said to have two screens that are each 5.5 inches in size. The S2 is odd in shape in that it's more of a cylinder when closed. However, it does run similar specs to the S1 which means it will include a Tegra 2 SoC as well as WiFi and 3G connectivity built in. [click to continue…]

MapQuest for Android Now Available

MapQuest is a service I haven't used for a few years. However, I see they are still in the game in that they have now just released an Android App that is available free for download in the Android Market.

The MapQuest App allows another option for turn-by-turn navigation on Android based devices. Other features include voice search, walking and driving directions, live traffic, voice guided directions and points of interest. [click to continue…]

More pictures of the HTC Thunderbolt 4G have been captured and put online just before the expected official announcement at CES 2011.

What has been learned from the hands-on with the HTC Thunderbolt 4G is firstly, that the battery seems very bad although that could potentially be fixed with a few software tweaks. We also learn that it has an ARM v7 processor with a Single Core running at 1GHz.

Other details show it has 8GB of internal memory along with the ability to add another 32GB to the device via a microSD card. The device has a 4.3 inch screen. [click to continue…]

Apple [AAPL] last week put up four new job descriptions. The job offerings are all identical and request people to join the iOS development team. Each candidate is to be an expert in navigation software.

A few hints in the text, found here, indicate that Apple is working on some kind of navigation product for iOS based devices as each candidate needs deep knowledge of computational geometry or graph theory as well as experience developing navigation software. [click to continue…]

Google [GOOG] has launched Google Maps 5.0 for Android. We briefly touched on the features a few days ago, and now we see it is ready for download.

The new version of maps is a big shift from previous versions in that Google now uses vectors to draw the maps rather than stitched together images. By using vectors, Google has been able to shrink maps down in file size by quite a lot, therefore allowing a number of locations to be easily stored off-line. As well as using vectors for the basic maps, Google has also created 3D buildings in various cities which allows users to quickly navigate and see the buildings around them. [click to continue…]

Sygic Mobile Maps is now available for the Nokia N8 smartphone. The Mobile Maps brings turn-by-turn navigation to the N8.

Google [GOOG] has launched a new Google Reader app for Android. Previously users had to rely on the web based version on their smartphone, but now a full app, self-contained, is now available.

Features included in the app include volume-key navigation, multiple accounts as well as the ability to share with others. [click to continue…]

ViewSonic has released details of the US launch of the ViewPad 7 and 10 models. ViewSonic confirmed that the 7 inch model will launch in the forth quarter of this year with a price tag of $479 while the larger 10 inch model will arrive early next year with a price tag of $629.

Each of the ViewSonic tablets is slightly different. The larger of the two devices is actually a dual booting machine that runs both Windows 7 Home Premium and Google Android 1.6. When switching it on you get to choose which OS boots up. For times when you quickly need to check email, you can boot in to Android and quickly grab those.
