Google Maps Navigation Android Update Brings Bike Routes and More

Google [GOOG] has provided an update for Google Maps Navigation on Android that brings a few new features to the software.

The new features include biking directions, a navigation shortcut for the homescreen along with sharing and a few other bits. The new version of Google Maps is 4.2 that works on all Android devices running Android OS 1.6 and above.

The biking directions on Google Maps bring details of lanes and trails to your Android smartphone. When navigating you can select a new Bike icon that brings up details of bicycling routes in the US. By using layers the software can show various coloured routes with each indicating a different type of challenge.

The Google Navigation shortcut brings a small arrow to the home screen of the Android device. By clicking the navigation shortcut you are able to go right in to the Navigation features of Google Maps and get navigating right away. [Read more…]

Google Maps Navigation now on Android 1.6

google-maps-navigation-layersGoogle [GOOG] have announced that Google Maps Navigation is now available in the US for those running Android 1.6 on their phone. The maps software is compatible with most (if not all) 1.6 based devices including the older T-Mobile G1.

Google Maps Navigation was first made available just a few weeks ago when the Motorola DROID was launched that ran the Android 2.0 operating system.

When using the software in the US you have on your phone a full satnav system that is kept up to date by Google and those providing maps. The service is online which requires you use a dataplan unless you want to run up a large bill. By having the service online you always have access to the latest map data available. [Read more…]

Google Maps Navigation Launches on Android 2.0

google-navGoogle [GOOG] have announced that they have created Google Maps Navigation that will be available on Android 2.0 phones. The new navigation system is free and is far better than the standard Maps program that is currently available. Whereas before the map system wouldn’t hand out directions (although it could follow you), the new version provides full navigation features.

The Google Maps Navigation is completely free which gives it an advantage and it works based on data downloaded as needed so you wont actually need to download all the maps. Searching is made easy as you can voice search and don’t necessarily need to know the full address to plan a route. The system also can use traffic information and use street view for helping you in your travels. [Read more…]

Android Google Maps 5.0 Download Now Available

Google [GOOG] has launched Google Maps 5.0 for Android. We briefly touched on the features a few days ago, and now we see it is ready for download.

The new version of maps is a big shift from previous versions in that Google now uses vectors to draw the maps rather than stitched together images. By using vectors, Google has been able to shrink maps down in file size by quite a lot, therefore allowing a number of locations to be easily stored off-line.
