Robotic Helicopters

robotic-helicoptersRobotics and AI have always interested me. For this reason I had to post about these robotic helicopters which apparently fly better then the RC pilot who trained them.

Experts from Stanford University created an intelligent system which was installed on some RC helicopters. A mixture of these two devices now allows them to fly alone... with out human help. The software is capable of learning. Data comes from a few sources such as other RC helicopters that it is surrounded by and also it grabs data from the ground too.

Twenty instructions per second are sent to each of the helicopters from a control station on the ground. In previous attempts the system did not take wind in to consideration and any slight change of the wind would send the helicopters to an expensive landing. The learning system now included in the latest version can monitor how a real pilot would adjust to wind and then learn it's self "in flight" to make real time corrections.

Well why take away the fun from RC helicopters? I am an RC enthusiast myself and I enjoy flying RC helicopters with my son. I am planning to get him this Mosquito Chopper from http://www.pressdigital.com.au/ for his birthday next month. Do you think this Robotic Helicopters would appeal to kids like him? I am still at a quandary as to which present to buy for him so I am still scouting around.
