The Shapeways Photoshaper is a new 3D printing device that creates a light sculpture out of regular 2D pictures.
To make a 3D printed photo you use Shapeways’ upload service. The system analyses the contrast on your photo and creates a depth layered picture. Think of it as a slab which is slightly transparent. The more you carve away the more light it lets through. By measuring the contrast on your pictures the lightest part of the pictures have the thinnest amount of material while the darker parts stay solid. With varying degrees between this you get a 3D landscape that lets different amount of light in creating a 3D image of your photo. The effect is quite cool.
The 3D photo will be produced and delivered globally within 10 days and costs between $40-50 (USD), including shipping. The Photoshaper accepts JPEG, PNG and GIF images (for best results use 1.5 megapixel or better which is supported by most digital cameras). The size of the 3D photo is 13cm – 9cm (5.11” – 3.5”) landscape and portrait.
Details of the service can be found over at Shapeways.
