It appears that Palm might be looking in to making an update to WebOS to allow for 3D style games to be downloaded. The iPhone already has this and also sells a bunch of games through the app store. Palm seem to be wanting to catch up and have announced that they are looking for a “Game Frameworks Engineer” for WebOS. Specifics of the job include the ability to work with graphics acceleration, pixel shading and other graphics related know how.
It has been known for a while that the Pre is very capable of 3D graphics thanks to a bunch of people who got a Playstation 1 emulator to work. Hopefully this official way will pave the way for some decent official games to appear on the Palm Pre.
Although no official announcement has been made, the information found in this job search page certainly indicates this is the direction they are wanting to go.
Palm is looking for developers who are passionate about gaming, handhelds, mobile communication and the possibilities for Palm in the gaming arena. The software developers we’re looking for will have strong mathematical/analytical skills and will be effective team members in a small, focused initiative.
