In just 2 weeks time, O2 will loose exclusive rights to sell the iPhone and the day after that, Orange are launching the iPhone on to their network. The iPhone will be sold through Orange shops as well as through Phones4U when launched and will now open up a bit of competition between the networks hopefully lowering the price of the phone on contract. As well as Phones4U being able to sell the iPhone for Orange, Carphone Warehouse will also be able to sell the iPhone in behalf of both Orange and O2.
After Orange start selling the iPhone it is expected that other networks will follow. We already know that Vodafone has signed an agreement which will see them start selling it early next year. 3 have also shown interest where Kevin Russell the chief executive has said they expect to stock it sometime next year.
“I would expect the iPhone to be on the 3 network sometime during 2010,” he told a Westminster eForum event in London. “At the moment, we don’t have the iPhone. We don’t really have any smartphones but if we improve our range of smartphones and introduce the iPhone then our data traffic will grow massively.”
It is expected that increased competition will be made regarding pricing of the iPhone, but due to it being a hit phone that does sell, Orange seem to want to increase value offered rather than competing on price by giving accessories with it or free pre-loaded applications. I personally hope for the former.
