OnStar have released details of the OnStar Ignition Block system. The system allows the police to remotely disable a car ignition once the car has been stolen.
When a car is stolen the OnStar service is activated and a GPS chip built in to the unit also relays the cars current co-ordinates when a signal is available.
OnStar claims that it currently works with police to attempt recovery of about 600 stolen vehicles per month and uses a service which helps to slow down cars that are involved in police chases.
The new Ignition Block capability is available on selected 2009 and 2010 GM vehicles equipped with OnStar, and will build on the company's Stolen Vehicle Assistance services already in effect.
